Which of the movies 1 thru 6 gives you that 'series' feel the best?

Re: Which of the movies 1 thru 6 gives you that 'series' feel the best

TMP felt the most trek-like experience for me, but as far as the characters are concerned, I'd go for TFF. The Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic really shined in that film.
It should be noted that the Spock from the TV series would not have attempted to master campfire traditions, which might have spared us “Row, row, row your boat.” The Kirk from the TV series would have talked “God” into self destruction or gotten it into trouble with its parents instead of blasting it with photon torpedoes and disruptors.

Just saw this article, which is pretty much about the same topic of this thread, inspired by a recent screening of "The Voyage Home" followed by a Nimoy Q & A. My first reaction to seeing it was, "Hey! He stole his article idea from TrekBBS!". :p

Thanks - what a great article and I agree 100%! WOK IMHO is the best ST film, but TVH is unquestionably the film I enjoy the most (with ST 2009 a close second in the enjoyment department). :techman:

TVH is to me the one most like the television series, with TFF a close second, flaws and all (and I'm not a hater of TFF for the record).

TVH is most like the old series, and so is TFF, for the wonderful camraderie and chemistry between the characters.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is slow but very enjoyable. It was different that the following films. I actually enjoyed the story. I think they were trying to make it too serious. Spock was very serious then. Kirk was tacturn. McCoy was McCoy, one of the few funny parts of the film is when we see McCoy with a beard bitching that he was drafted.

I liked this film the best because it wasn't a story of the Enterprise off to kill some evil guy with a bunch of explosions and crap. It was about making a discovery and solving a problem. The only thing bad about that film was those uniforms! Ugh!

Actually, it is hard to make a choice of what the best film was, or which one was most like the series. The Wrath of Khan was taken straight from an episode in the TV series. The Search for Spock was a continuation of II, and The Voyage Home (IV) the last of the trilogy.

V sucked. The Final Frontier? Bull cookies!

VI was an excellent last film, even though the cast are all senior citizens, and poor Mr. Scott the size of a cargo hold. VI should have been V and V should have never, ever, ever have been made.

Strangely enough, I agree that Final Frontier is the closest in feel to a TOS episode.

The other films go in a different direction to the series.

TOS never tried doing a storyline like the Genesis Trilogy. That was something very different.

And those of you saying TVH was like TOS, well, I guess to an extent it is, with the slingshotting, and the culture clash time travel comedy. But there's the small matter (well, rather large actually) of the Enterprise not appearing for almost the entire film. The only Trek film of them all where an Enterprise doesn't play a major role in the story. And also, TOS rarely featured Earth in the 23rd century timeline. Sure, they went back in time to Earth's past on numerous occasions, and visited many duplicate Earth-like planets, but the story of the Whale Probe putting Earth in jeopardy isn't really like something we'd see in the original series.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

Which of the movies 1 thru 6 gives you that 'series' feel the best?

This is a fun question, because it's made me pause and reflect upon what the"feel" of the original series is. I would say the following were important components: the music, the cinematography, the pacing, the kind of stories and the way are are told (with lots of dialogue), and the kind of special effects used.

Star Trek TMP has such different colors, music, and pacing than the original series, it's hard for me to pick that one. If you look deep there are elements of the original series there, but those elements are buried among the changes.

Star Trek II and Star Trek III are how some people wish the series was, but I think they're quite different because of how Meyer and Bennett tried to push the envelope with big sweeping issues, such as Kirk having a son, Spock's death, our heroes turning into outlaws, stealing the Enterprise, and the destroying the Enterprise. There are also a lot of great sets, allowing us to hop around the galaxy and visit Earth, Ceti Alpha 5, the Mutara Nebula, the Genesis planet, Vulcan, etc. That isn't the case with TOS, because the creators just couldn't do it. The locations in TOS are mostly either "just like earth" or a small barren landscape or cave.

As for Star Trek IV, I think the pacing is similar to the original series, but there are few episodes of TOS that take place away from the Enterprise. Without that ship, especially the bridge, it just doesn't seem the same to me.

Star Trek VI strikes me as the most different.

So like many others before me, I'll go with Star Trek V. The story and quick pacing are reminiscent of TOS, there's lots of Kirk, Spock & Bones dilaogue, and most of the movie takes place on the Enterprise and a couple barren sets.

Re: Which of the movies 1 thru 6 gives you that 'series' feel the best

Just imagine if there were never any Star Trek movies made for the big screen, no Next Generation or anything Trek related produced from the time TOS (and TAS I suppose) ended until 1989 when Paramount decides to make a made for TV Star Trek "reunion" movie. That is what The Final Frontier is like to me.

Re: Which of the movies 1 thru 6 gives you that 'series' feel the best

I think it's a tie for me between V and VI. One of the big things I enjoy about TOS is the interaction between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy so I think those 2 movies captured it the best. Plus, they seem to tie in more to the adventure quality a lot of the episodes I've seen were about.
