Of all the complete stories which are lost, which First Doctor, and which Second Doctor story do you most want to be found and re-released?

This counts only the stories in which every episode of the story is missing.

First Doctor -

4 Marco Polo (4 eps)
18 Galaxy Four (4 eps)
19 Mission to the Unknown (1 ep)
20 The Myth Makers (4 eps)
22 Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve (4 eps)
26 The Savages ( 4 eps)
28 The Smugglers (4 eps)

Second Doctor -

30 The Power of the Daleks (6 eps)
31 The Highlanders (4 eps)
34 The Macra Terror (4 eps)
42 Fury From the Deep (6 eps)

For the First Doctor, it was a tough choice. After looking up all of those stories, I ended up choosing "The Myth Makers". It marked the departure of Vicki, and the introduction to Katarina, making it an important story overall. The story also seemed interesting.

As for the Second Doctor, that choice was easier: "The Power of the Daleks". Mainly because it's the Second Doctor's first adventure, but also because it's a Dalek story. "The Highlanders" is a very close second for me.

The Massacre & The Power of the Daleks

Though, if I had my choice of any missing Hartnell (complete or incompletely missing), I'd go for The Dalek's Masterplan.

Marco Polo and The Power of the Daleks :)

But to the honest The Underwater Menace usurps them all as far as I'm concerned...

The Myth Makers for sure-- I want to see Katarina, and Cotton was such a funny writer. (I don't like The Gunfighters much, but his novela of it and Myth Makers are fab.)

And Power of the Daleks is just obvious. Macra and Fury just sound like typical base-under-siege tales.

Fury.. looks particularly good though and would seem to be one of the first times the series went out of it's way to scare the ever-living-shit out of the audience..

Like others, The First Doctor is a hard choice. I love Marco Polo, The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve, and The Savages, but I think Marco Polo wins it in the end simply because of it's epic historical feel.

The Power of the Daleks for The Second Doctor, if for no other reason than because it's my second favorite classic Dalek story (after Remembrance of the Daleks).

Embarassingly I don't think I know enough about early Who to judge. I would quite like to see the Highlanders though given it's the Jamie origin story.

1st Doctor is tough - I love Massacre & Myth Makers but given how good Marco Polo sounds on audio and how good the photos look I'd love to see it for real.

2nd Doctor - I would have gone for Power Of The Daleks as PT's first story plus I really like Ben & Polly but I'm not a fan of the Daleks so Fury Of The Deep I think to see how good it really is.

The Power of the Daleks for Troughton, definitely.

For me, all the Hartnells are about on the same level.

Hartnell - Mission to the Unknown

It's always been a favourite of mine and one I really want to see. I know it doesn't feature the Doctor, the companions or the Tardis but it's an episode that lets the Daleks shine in their own light. The James Bond-esque lead does a good job but we all know how it's gonna end.

Troughton - The Power of the Daleks

This is a no brainer. The Daleks use an animal cunning not seen since their first outing at the end of 1963, and by the third episode Hartnell is but a memory. Even the middle episodes of the story hold their ground, with the both the rebels and the Daleks gaining ground. My only point of contention would be the corner stone of Dalek stories to come; it takes bloody ages for anyone to realise the Doctor is telling the truth!

By the numbers I should've picked Marco Polo then we would've had 13 episodes back and we'd have 95 to go, but I picked my favourites. :)

This is an interestingly different approach to this question: normally, you can factor in which of the largely missing stories look likely to hold up on the basis of the single surviving episode, and opinions have changed when things were recovered.
For instance, a lot of younger fans (who'd heard soundtracks) doubted that Evil of the Daleks could be as good as their elders claimed, but were then impressed by how good Evil 2 was in terms of looks and directions. Then when Tomb turned up... it was OK, but visually wasn't as strong as imagined.

So limiting this to the completely missing stories is a nice idea.
I think I'll have to go for Marco Polo, with massive guilt over Massacre, Myth Makers and Savages; and Power of the Daleks.

Plus we have some stories (Marco, Mission, Massacre) without any visual on-screen reference surviving, where as the others either have surviving archive clips (Galaxy 4) or tele-snaps (most of the others).

The Tomb of the Cybermen Tele-snaps were found in 1993, two years after the discovery of the story itself. Were any snaps floating round in fan circles before this, or was the story's reputation entirely built on memory?

I've gone for The Massacre and Power, though it was tricky choosing between Massacre and Marco Polo.

Entirely on memory, I think.

Thinking about it, I don't think any episode's ever been recovered when its telesnaps were known to exist.

George Gallaccio recovered Tele-snaps for The Crusade Episode One (plus the other three) in the late nineties, although this may have been around the same time as the episode's actual discovery.

At the very least I *think* they were published in DWM before the VHS release.

Could be wrong.

Otherwise yeah, no other episode with Tele-snaps have been found. :(

The Gallaccio snaps were discovered in 1999 (only a few months after The Lion turned up) and I think they appeared in DWM around the same time that the VHS was released.
