Why?

The E looks like it was designed to be a "cool sci-fi warship" rather than a star trek hero ship. That appealed to me when the film was released, as something that looks good attacking the Borg, but feels wrong for the general purpose of a Starfleet vessel.

Agreed with this 100%. I loved the 1701-E at the time because it felt kickass and it looked really good as an aesthetic counterpoint to the Borg in First Contact, but over time (and certainly in the two movies that followed) I came to feeling like it lacked the distinctive character of the 1701-D, almost as though it was a generic Starfleet guest ship like the bazillion or so we saw across TNG'S seven seasons rather than a hero ship with the flavor of "I could imagine actually living there". The 1701-D just felt more lived in.

I never liked the D. It's the 1986 Mercury Sable of Space. It's round in all the wrong places. It looks off balance. It doesn't look fast (yes it's space, a cube will be fine, but usually it seems like Starfleet engineers have a bit of panache) .
It's supposedly one of the best ships in the fleet, but its sister ship got eaten like breakfast by Jem Hadar. It has wooden safety rails. It has everything but Wilson Phillips playing on the background speakers and someone announcing the next dental appointment in the waiting room.

The E looks like it means business. I like it alright.

The D.

It's the one I grew up with since I wasn't born yet when TOS was first on.

In saying that, if someone says "the Enterprise" the TOS version is the first image that springs to mind. It's beyond iconic and hard to separate from Star Trek as a whole.
