The title says it all: Which is the most successful Trek: TOS or TNG?
(I am mainly interested in facts like which made the most money, had the most fans and so on.)

That's a tough question. I'd have to say TNG because it propelled Trek into what it is today.

In terms of spin-offs, undoubtedly TNG. Yes, it didn't quite match up to TOS on the big screen... but everything through till ENT was one long production lasting 18 years.

TOS did three years (maybe add another two, '64 & '65 working on pilots). A short lived animated series and 6 films, nearly each time thought to be the last. The Next Gen era just kept on going, until TPTB got disappointed with the financial returns in 2002 and dwindling ratings come 2005.

Wayne Campbell, Wayne's World (1992) "Ah yes, it's a lot like 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. In many ways it's superior but will never be as recognized as the original."

I remember this got a laugh in the theaters back when I was in junior high school and a glance at my hardcore Trek fiend of a friend nodded in solidarity with the sentiment.

But I'm sure I'd heard or read within a year after that movie that it was somehow determined that Picard and the crew of the NCC-1701-D were, at that time, more recognized or recognizable then than Kirk and Co. of the TOS era. Again, I don't know how this was quoted (surveys, Nielsen ratings?) but I took it at face value as that was truly when TNG was a phenom, it's popularity was soaring and all the guys in my class (even some of the jocks and rednecks) were tuning in to TNG on Saturday nights (MITV in Atlantic Canada, 7:00pm before the Commish;)). Of course, none of the girls were watching. They were busy growing boobs and reading Seventeen and YM.

These days... I dunno. TNG did spawn DS9 and VOY, but with a reboot of TOS going on, who knows? Maybe Kirk will get his crown back, if he ever lost it in the first place.

TOS is the classic that everyone tries to emulate, however I would have to say TNG. The strength of TOS lies in how well the on screen personas melded. We know the off screen relations werent perfect, but just like another Desilu production (I Love Lucy) where Fred and Ethel could not stand each other in real life, they played great together.

TNG moved the franchise forward well beyond Kirk, Spock, McCoy and company. It also had more years to mature the crew and let them grow.

Although this is heresy, Berman and Braga established far more of Trek mythology through TNG, DS9, and Voyager than Roddenberry. Gene invented the universe, Berman and Braga populated it.

Now, of course, there were some real screw ups with ENT, however the last 2 seasons began to rectify some. Too bad it didn't last another season or two (if only to see Porthos BITE the fat ass creeper doc, who always reminded me of a child molester)
