In the case of Marine Corps pilots the answer is that they can do. In fact John Glenn was a Marine fighter pilot. We know from 'Metamorphosis' that John was a Marine - I'm not sure if they normally get into NASA.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I like when they carry over those motifs because it puts you in the mood for the character, so to speak. I don't understand why they didn't carry over some of those, because it was Shirley Walker the whole time wasn't it?
I like to think that Abin was the main Green Lantern of Sector 2814 and something happened to his first backup and he needed a new one and thus John was given a ring. Perhaps they met fighting a foe on Earth or maybe it was as simple as Abin commanding the ring to find the worthy person?
Then, John was off somewhere during 'In Brightest Day,' perhaps still training with Katma, and when he came back, Kyle was sent off to Oa to train with Katma and ended up being assigned there for a while.
They may have addressed it in one of the tie-in comics but I haven't read those.
This is all it says about his background over at the DCAU wiki:
So that doesn't clear up much. I also recall Timm saying the reason his eyes glow green is due to 'fifteen years' of exposure to ring radiation, so minus ten years of training, he must have been a GL for five years prior to the start of the show, which fits with the first episode of Justice League being five years after the end of 'Superman:TAS.'
Kyle had one hell of a training course ahead of him. If my mental math is right, he'd probably been on Oa for up to seven years when we saw him in 'The Return.'![]()
As I recall, John and Guy were both referred to as Hal's backup GLs back in the day in the comics.Do GLs have backups? I never heard anything about that.

...Which is probably a less convoluted idea than having a sector-native represent each sector. No, my understanding (based on the Wikipedia article) is that John was simply assigned to a different sector of the galaxy after his training ended; since Earth's sector was Abin Sur's, there was no need to assign John there. Instead, he got assigned to some other sector that needed the manpower. Once Sur died, the sector needed a new GL assigned to it and Rayner was still a novice, so Stewart was given Sur's old posting.
IIRC, it was the original intention that the first season of Justice League took place up to five years after the end of Superman (hence Superman's initial 'squint'), but by the second season (or even earlier) they'd decided against it, and the squint goes away. I would have thought that they'd have remembered Tim's appearance in RotJ, but maybe they chose to leave it ambiguous?Where do you get that JL begins 5 years after S:TAS? If that were true, wouldn't Supergirl have to be Superwoman? Not to mention that ...
In the DCAU chronology I'm working up, I have a hard enough time reconciling that with JL beginning just a year or so after "Legacy," since he looks like he's still only 13 or so in the RotJ flashbacks. If there were a 5-year gap there, Robin would've had to be in his early 20s by the time of JLU.
Good points. Your DCAU chronology is probably more accurate than my random rememberings anyway.By my chronology, it's more like four years and change. And I question the DCAU Wiki's "ten years of training" idea. I don't think training would take that long. Oa is where Kyle is assigned for active service as of "The Return." Since John was asking the Guardians to let him and Kyle trade places, I'd assume that means that Kyle was a full-fledged Lantern in his own right, qualified to fill the same post as John.
Guy Gardner - Nathan fillion (see his performance as Captain Hammer in Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and you'll know I'm right).
John Stewart - Andre Braugher
And I'm pretty sure Jade's alive again.
I've heard people suggest Ben Browder as Hal Jordan.
But my main exposure to the Green Lantern has been from Justice League/JLU, and there are already more than enough white superheroes, so I'd kind of like it to feature John Stewart. Maybe Samuel L. Jackson?
Jackson's already down as Nick Fury.
One other thing about a GL feature film is that the odds of Warner Animation making a GL animated series would get a whole lot better - and the GLC concept is perfect subject matter for a cartoon series.
I'm greatly looking forward to the GL DTV animated movie. If we get a live action feature film and an animated series to boot then my cup will runneth over as a lifelong GL fan.
And I'm pretty sure Jade's alive again.
Really? I was reading some JSA recently and Alan lost it a little when he met the Earth II Jade... Although I am seriously behind on my reading with Green lantern Corps.
Wiki says something about "the original jade" in OYL I don't quite understand completely.
And wasn't Jackson supposedly dropped from playing Fury do to negotiation difficulties anyway?
