Of these three (only), which one should I get? Each is from the Fourth Doctor era. I'm only getting one at this time, as I'll be getting the others for my birthday.

Planet of Evil - "The expedition to Zeta Minor began with eight men. Seven were murdered. One survived - but he was not the murderer. The Doctor lands on the planet at the same time as the expedition's rescue team, and is immediately taken prisoner - the suspected murderer. But even stranger things soon begin to happen..."

Companion: Sarah Jane Smith

The Talons of Weng-Chiang - "The Doctor brings Leela to Victorian London of the 1890s, to see how her ancestors lived, but is rapidly drawn into a fiendish plot involving Chinese tongs, disappearing women, an Oriental stage magician, a murderous ventriloquist's dummy and giant rats in the sewers."

Companion: Leela

Destiny of the Daleks - "The TARDIS lands the Fourth Doctor and Romana on a strangely familiar planet. There, they meet the android Movellans, who are locked in a war with the Daleks. The planet is Skaro, and in a bunker sits an enemy long thought dead — Davros, creator of the Daleks."

Companion: Romana II

"Talons" is generally considered one of the best of the old serials. Those other two I didn't really care for. Talons is pretty good.

I voted for The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

Planet of Evil is one of the stories where I instantly thought my money would have been better spent on a different one.

Destiny of the Daleks is great for a few reasons (and not so great for a few too) but both visually and for story, I think The Talons of Weng-Chiang has it.

Talons for sure. When you get a chance, follow it up with 'Horror Of Fang Rock'. Though not a sequel, it does follow straight on and is a good story in it's own right.

Another vote for Talons. It takes awhile for the story to get moving, but it has a nice Sherlock Holmes feel to it, and the Doctor's attempts to pull a Professor Higgins on Leela's Eliza Doolittle (a byproduct of an abandoned background arc) is fun to watch. It was also one of the last chances to see the Fourth Doctor with only a single companion (K9 was only a few stories away and after that he always had at least two companions for the remainder of this time). I also recommend it to you if you've been reading the IDW standalone comic books (you'll know which one if you have).

Planet of Evil is also considered a classic, but Talons is considered the more classic. If you're big into Sarah Jane you might want to go with this one instead.

Destiny of the Daleks is perhaps unfairly maligned -- it was, after all, script edited by Douglas Adams -- but it is the lesser of the Daleks stories (perhaps of all of them), and the impact of the Paris filming on the show's budget (see City of Death) is pretty noticeable here. However if there is one thing to recommend it, it's the arrival of Lalla Ward as the new Romana. She and Baker show instant chemistry; it's no surprise they fell for each other during filming. And she looks so damn cute in her pink version of Baker's outfit (too bad she didn't wear it more often). It's a shame the regeneration wasn't handled better (now that we know Mary Tamm was more than willing to film one, but wasn't asked), or that her debut didn't come in a strong story, such as City of Death.

Cheers!

Alex

The Talons of Weng-Chieng without a doubt. The Planet of Evil is pretty good but it's not in the same league. Destiny of the Daleks doesn't even come close.

Easily Talons.
Looks like that's what I'm doing.

Then get all the rest..

I'm almost there. There are only five classic Doctor Who dvds that I don't have right now. These three plus Ghost Light and Curse of Fenric. In September, that'll change, since there's more being released. But I'm working on it. :D

I just picked up Ghost Light last month when I got the Caves of Androzani and Attack of the Cybermen. It took me three tries to watch Ghost Light. I kept falling asleep.

And all this talk about what to buy made me look at some myself. But not only have amazon put their prices back up... they seem to have raised them a dollar or two.

Swines. I'll wait for War Games and the Pertwee two serial Dalek set. They'll be expensive enough.

You might want to try and see if www.dvdpricesearch.com can help find cheaper prices. It's generally the first place I go. You don't buy anything on that site, it searches the net and finds the 8 cheapest places to buy the title you're looking for *new* ... It also searches amazon.com's used dvd prices.

Deepdiscount.com just finished its 25% off sale a few days ago. What's funny about that, as I've found out, is that every single thing I ordered through this last sale is now cheaper at www.buy.com. But it's ok, cuz I got em all within five days of ordering, with free shipping.

I too find Ghostlight hard to watch. It's not just that I am not the biggest fan of Sylvester McCoy either - the story is barely comprehensible imo.

About Ghost Light ... It's one of the cheapest Who titles out there. It's about eleven dollars right now, new, several dollars cheaper than other one-disc titles. Is it really that bad, that they're basically giving this one away?

Edit - After reading some of the reviews on Amazon, there seem to be a small group who really love it, and a majority who think it's a convoluted mess. I think I have my answer with that.

I mean sure, I'll own it, but it'll be later.
