I really liked the few remastered episodes I've seen (not an easy task hunting it down in the UK for some reason, especially if you don't have satellite or cable).

The new effects just don't sit all that well with the original footage for me though. I feel aware that they've dropped in new effects here and there.

The thing I don't understand is why they'd go to the trouble of creating a beautiful CGI ship, but still have it move awkwardly, like the original model for certain shots. The opening credits is an example I can think of straight away for this. It still looks like it's tilted forward at that quriky angle while it's flying towards the screen.

I dunno, maybe it's just me :p

It seems like the "remastered" vote should be split into two options:
1) original;
2) remastered picture and sound without new effects;
3) remastered picture and sound with new effects.

I voted for original, but I would have voted for number 2 if that was a choice.

I voted for the original. It's the one I grew up with and the effects were just fine then and still are. At least for me.

There is a certain excitement before seeing the remastered episodes, an anticipation to see what they did. Some effects I enjoyed, some I didn't. It always irked me that there were unseen ships. I understand the distance factor, but I knew it was an excuse based on finance. I have not seen all the remastered episodes; but in the end, they are a just a novelty for me. Original episodes all the way.

Actually, I saw one of the early remasters and the Enterprise was "flying" straight and level in the opening credits. It did not look "right" at all (along the lines of giving Spock rounded ears). I'd bet that they took more flak over that, than with the angle. I note that later versions restored most if not all of the original angle.

I have not seen all the remastered episodes; but in the end, they are a just a novelty for me.
It took me awhile to get over my hatred of what they had done and reach the level of them being a novelty. All's I can really say is that they were not enough to get my granddaughter to like TOS. However, a preview of the upcoming movie had her claiming "you're going to hate it" to me. And then she said that "this movie is for me."

i was referring to the Remastered edition with the new cgi effects

You're kidding. I'm the only one who's voted for remastered? :wtf:

I'll help you.

I vote remastered, because I'm getting the missus and kids interested in Trek. I told them what a great episode "The Doomsday Machine" was, but they couldn't get past the terrible special effects in the original. It took them right out of the story. The remastered is far superior IMO.

You choice is a valid question, but a polarizing one.

I'm not satisfied with the aging, sometimes lackluster FX of the "original original", but TOS Remastered clearly fumbled on my expectations. So I can't vote for either one.

Tp put it another way, I love the original title music, '60's quirks and all, which the "remastered" version displaced with a title track I can only describe as sanitized. They took the '60's out of it. It now sounds like an imitation. On the other hand, I love the higher resolution of the "remastered" version, which finally cleans up many of the long-standing glitches of the "original" production.

I think the "remastering" crew at Paramount/CBS Digital showed that TOS is definitely worth remastering, and that they could do some new and interesting things. But that doesn't excuse some of their mistakes. Some of the CGI FX in space look cartoonish.

I like Star Trek TOS for what it is:a 1960s Sci Fi program with excellent stories and characters. I wouldn't have minded seeing the audio/video remastered and/or cleaned up, but I've never seen the point in "improving" it with CGI effects. They stand out like a sore thumb just as the CGI does in the "new and improved" Star Wars and detracts from the show more than it adds.

There really is no choice, you get the great stories of TOS with better clarity, color and FX! Are you kidding? Its a no-brainer! TOS-R.

I think most of the new fx look great. One exception is the Enterprise itsself. It just doesn't look right to me for some reason. But the rest of the effects are pretty cool. When I was a kid, the original Doomsday Machine fx blew me away. Granted, it was a wind sock dipped in concrete, but I bought it hook, line and sinker. I especially loved the light fx on the inside of the planet killer. I haven't seen the remastered Doomsday machine yet, but that episode as not worn particularly well. The nacelles on the burnt AMT model actually shake in one shot. Not sure who must have put the quarter on the dolly tracks, but I hope they got fired! Anyway, the episodes that I have seen of the remastered were enhanced by the new fx. Frankly, today's spoiled and unimaginative viewers just laugh at TOS effects. If this can put some new life in TOS, then I'm all for it. I am hoping that there will also be some renewed interest after the new movie comes out. If there is, the people who will be joining the Trek world for the first time will want the enhanced effects.

I just wish they'd gone a bit further and fixed some of the audio blunders (wrong sound effects, like in "The Man Trap" when we hear Kirk's communicator chirp instead of the call sign, missing cues, like "The Corbomite Maneuver" when Sulu announces "One minute" and Balok was supposed to say "One minute" at the same time, which is why Sulu says "I knew he would.")

Replacing Kirk's missing insignia in "The Enemy Within" would've been nice, too, but then they'd have to fix Lt Hansen's missing insignia in one episode, the title of which escapes me at the moment.

And no, I haven't voted either way.

TOS Remastered offers a fun new twist on a timeless classic, but I have to go with the pure timeless classic. :)

The original, classic f/x will always have a fond spot in my heart, but the newer ones are simply better 90-99% of the time.

Awww... I'm sorry. :(

My 4 year old daughter thinks TOS and TAS are the coolest things ever. Every night, she looks at me with glowing eyes and asks, "Daddy? Can we play Star Trek?!"
