I just came from a store with a whole bunch of classic Doctor Who DVDs which is currently having a buy 2, get 1 free deal. I already picked up 6 stories in this deal ("The Sensorites," "The Ark," "The Gunfighters," "The Dominators," "Terror of the Autons," & "The Deadly Assassin"). I'm now looking to pick up 3 more. The ones that really caught my attention were: "The War Machines," "The Daemons," "Day of the Daleks," "The Mutants," "The Three Doctors," "Invasion of the Dinosaurs," "The Talons of Weng-Chiang," & "Resurrection of the Daleks." Which 3 should I get?
 
I voted The Daemons and Talons for obvious "classics - get them" reasons.

Had a hard time selecting a third. The War Machines is really good late Hartnell, but you went heavy B&W Who, so I steered clear for something later.

I'm one of the few who likes The Mutants. I think it's a little underrated/underappreciated - but it also suffers from the 6 parter syndrome of Pertwee's time (paaaddddinnnnggg).

In the end I went with Day on more or less a coin toss to see it with the revised voices and effects.

A nice cross section of Doctors and stories.
 
Resurrection and Talons were the easy picks for me and then I went with The Three Doctors but I could also see an argument for Day of the Daleks.
 
I agree it's kinda inexcusable that it's taken this long for me to see "The Talons of Weng-Chiang."

"The Daemons" is slightly more excusable since it's taken a while for it to come to DVD. But still, Jon Pertwee considered this one his personal favorite.

There's noting particularly special for me about "The War Machines," "The Mutants," or "Invasion of the Dinosaurs." They're just among the few classic stories that I still haven't seen. However, I'm a bit gunshy about "Invasion of the Dinosaurs." I heard that the attempt to re-colorize episode 1 was only partially successful. So I have a sneaking suspicion that they'll eventually come out with a special edition of this one once they figure out how to improve the color on it.

I already own "The Three Doctors" & "Resurrection of the Daleks" but I am interested in the special features on the new special editions.

I've already seen "Day of the Daleks" on an old VHS copy. I wasn't too impressed the first time around but I'm interested in the new updates they did to extend the battle sequences and re-dub the Daleks' voices.
 
The War Machines was a prototype for the modern day earth based stories that would dominate the Pertwee era and to a lesser degree the Troughton era as well.

It also has a direct link to last year's The Doctor's Wife.

The problem with so much of the Third Doctor's run is that Useless was his companion. But he also had the awesome Liz Shaw for his first season, and the gold star for all companions, Sarah Jane Smith, for his final. Invasion of the Dinosaurs, regardless of the colorization issue, starred both Sarah Jane and the Brig. How can you go wrong with that pair?
 
The Talons of Weng-Chiang is a must. Invasion of the Dinosaurs is, IMO, a lot of fun.
 
Talons cos it's the best, Three Doctors cos Troughton's hilarious in it, and Day of the Daleks cos it includes a new version with CG effects, new location footage, improved voices, and, well, more Daleks.

As for the rest- War Machines is OK, Daemons is OK but overrated, Mutants is boring and slow, and Dinos would be good if they'd had dinosaurs that move. Or that actually roar instead of *saying* "roar". Really, this is such a fucking no-brainer on the "which story needs CG effects as an option" that the fact that they didn't do it pretty much undoes at least half a dozen releases worth of respect for them... On the upside, Jon does the Vulcan nerve pinch at one point...

Definately agreed about Liz Shaw. I already have most of her stories on DVD ("Spearhead from Space," "The Silurians," "Inferno"). Now I'm just waiting for "The Ambassadors of Death." (I'm told it's rubbish but IT'S LIZ SHAW!)

I suspect they were unable to do any CGI effects for this one because they don't have any clean plate shots. I mean, the episodes themselves didn't even totally all survive. I think it would be very easy to be missing the raw elements necessary to insert new effects. (Although, I wonder if some kind of vidfire or anti-vidfire process could be used to at least slightly better match up the film plate shots with the superimposed video dinosaurs.)
 
Well, because of the strong showing in the polls, I picked up "The Daemons" & "The Talons of Weng-Chiang." For the 3rd DVD, I went with "Day of the Daleks." (BTW, the special edition of "Day of the Daleks" is a very marked improvement over the original. I highly recommend it. I put my full review of it in the current Jon Pertwee thread.)

I also saw that "The War Machines" was cheaper than I originally thought, so I picked up that one, along with a couple others that I didn't see at the store last time to fill in some other holes in my collection ("The Keys of Marinus" & "Dragonfire").

So that makes 12 new DVDs I've picked up in the last week:
5 William Hartnells-- "The Keys of Marinus," "The Sensorites," "The Ark," "The Gunfighters," "The War Machines."
1 Patrick Troughton-- "The Dominators."
3 Jon Pertwees-- "Terror of the Autons," "The Daemons," "Day of the Daleks."
2 Tom Bakers-- "The Deadly Assassin," "The Talons of Weng-Chiang."
1 Sylvester McCoy-- "Dragonfire."
