Which Cast Member Had the Most Uniforms?

Red Ranger

Admiral
In Memoriam
People,

More trivia, but I think the answer is Kirk. I'm counting the series and the movies, but he had the most costumes of all the characters.

Let's look at the evidence:

Kirk:

-Four uniforms in the series -- two gold-green tunics, two green tunics, four all together.
- xx uniforms in the movies -- admiral's white-and-green uniform; captain's all-grey uniform, white short-sleeved top (TMP); admiral's burgundy duty uniform; landing party coat (TWOK); alternate burgundy duty uniform jacket (TFF); burgundy vest variant (seen in TWOK and GEN).

Total = 11.

Anyone have any additions or care to challenge the total?

Red Ranger

TOS dress uniform.

In TMP he has a grey jumpsuit (I'm sure their are photos of him in it). I think it's worn under the landing party jacket and is not the regular grey uniform.

Kirk's vests are different in TWOK and TFF (so that makes 12)

Landing party outfit in TFF.

Thanks, KevasTrader. Although wouldn't you count the landing party jacket in TMP? And I forgot the commando outfit in TFF, as well. That would make it 14, I think. -- RR

Kirk did have the most costume changes because he was the lead character, and Shatner the lead star. Spock would probably be a close second in terms of costume changes.

OK, let's get really nitpicky and say the awful red PT trousers in "Charlie X", which apper to be regulation issue and therefore could be classed as part of one's uniform.

Also regarding uniforms, can anyone remember an episode where Kirk tells the landing party to turn their uniforms "up" when they are on a cold planet? It's as though they have a controllable heating system within the tops. The controls are at the back waistband or hem.

^ I'd guess either "The Naked Time" or "The Enemy Within". Probably the latter.

Worf has worn quite a few.
He wore both the red and gold versions of the S1-2 uniforms.
He wore all the S4-S7 colors thanks to "Parallels".
He wore red DS9 & red FC uniforms.
He's worn numerous dress variations of all of the above.
He's worn several different Klingon uniforms over the years.

O'Brien has worn quite a few, as well. Pretty much the same as Worf, minus the "Parallels" color changes and the Klingon uniforms. And for O'Brien we can add TOS uniform.

For Kirk, by the way:
Add his red cadet uniform, black TOS-like uniform, & (presumably) gold TOS-like uniform.

During TOS, the uniforms didn't have bat-thermal underwear qualities. We see in "The Enemy Within," the stranded landing party use blankets and phasers to stay warm, and in "Spock's Brain" Chekov uses a phaser to heat some rocks. Then there are the landing party jackets from "The Cage."

You may be thinking of TAS. In "The Terratin Incident," Spock mentions that their uniforms are made of Xenylon, an algee-based synthetic fabric, which, iirc, keeps them warm as well as shirnking with the crew after the wave bombardment.

I know what I'm talking about, I just can't remember the episode.

Okay, but you did ask if anyone remembered an episode where "Kirk tells the landing party to turn their uniforms 'up' when they are on a cold planet?" And I answered the question, no need to get snippy.

But I am willing to concede that I misremembered, and thought that you might've seen it in TAS. Well, I double-checked (because I hate to not be accurate) and was wrong. It was in "Spock's Brain" at the top of Act II, right after the beam down.

Kirk says adjust temperatures to 72, and the landing party adjust something behind their shirts -- indicating some kind of control on their belts or waist area. It happens so quickly that it's easy to miss, which I did over all these years of watching the series. Then again, I seldom pop in "Spock's Brain."

"Suit temperatures to 72" - Kirk, Spock's Brain.

EDIT: Like middy said.

That's FASCINATING about the uniforms having climate control! Also funny that there has to be an order from Kirk to basically set one's comfort level.

I have to pop in Spock's Brain to see this ASAP ... I watch that ep as much as any other, too - I love it!

The uniform question is cool - I was thinking that if it all stopped after Classic Trek, McCoy would be in the running to at least tie Kirk. And what about Dr. M'Benga - didn't he have two?

Middy:

I think you may be correct. Let's review:

Spock:
-Three uniforms in the series (blue ribbed collar tunic in The Cage; golden ribbed collar tunic in Where No Man Has Gone Before; blue tunic with black collar for the rest of the series);
-Four uniforms in the movies (gray tunic/pants, with gray-blue "dickie"; tan/brown landing party jacket (TMP); burgundy duty uniform with white turtleneck under jacket; tan commando outift (TWOK on, TFF).

So looks like seven all together, or about half the number of Kirk's outfit. Now, all the cast's totals would be higher if we counted stuff like spacesuits and a couple of times, Spock wore the blue jumpsuit enlisted folks wore while in sick bay.

As long as we're counting Spock's, let's look at the rest of the main cast:

McCoy:
-Two uniforms in the series (blue tunic with black collar; blue short-sleeved tunic over black T-shirt);
-Seven uniforms in the movies (gray tunic/pants with v-neck and lapels; white medical togs/jumpsuit; tan landing party jacket (TMP); burgundy jacket/greenish turtleneck/black uniform pants; burgundy landing party coat/greenish turtleneck/black uniform pants; white medical togs/jumpsuit with greenish turtleneck underneath; tan commando outfit (TWOK on).

Total: 9

Scotty:

-Two uniforms in the series (golden tunic with ribbed collar in Where No Man Has Gone Before; red tunic with black collar);
- Six uniforms in the movies (gray tunic/pants; white engineer's outfit (TMP); burgundy jacket/gold turtleneck/black pants; white engineer's outfit with additional accoutrements; alternate duty burgundy jacket with lapels/gold turtleneck/black pants; white turtleneck/black jacket/black pants (TWOK on).)

Total: 8.

Sulu:
-Two uniforms in the series (blue ribbed tunic collar in Where No Man Has Gone Before; golden tunic with black collar, rest of the series.)
-Five uniforms in the movies (golden "leisure suit" uniform; golden tunic/pants; white short-sleeved top/golden pants (TMP); burgundy jacket/gold turtleneck/black pants; beige commando outfit (TWOK, TSFT, TFF); burgundy jacket/white turtleneck/black pants (TUC).)

Total: 7.

Uhura:
-Two uniforms in the series (golden dress/uniform; red dress/uniform);
-Five uniforms in the movies (golden tunic/pants; ; white short-sleeved top/golden pants (TMP); burgundy jacket/blue-gray turtleneck/black pants; burgundy jacket/blue-gray turtleneck/black skirt; beige commando outfit (TWOK, et al.).

Total: 7.

Chekov:

-One uniform in the series (golden uniform tunic);
-Three uniforms in the movies (golden tunic/pants (TMP); burgundy jacket/blue-gray turtleneck/black pants (TWOK on)).

Total: 3.

So, Kirk has the most (14), followed by McCoy (9), Scotty (8), with Spock, Sulu, and Uhura tied with 7, and Chekov bringing up the rear wtih 3.

What about the TOS dress uniforms? Kirk, Spock. McCoy and Scotty each had one. Scotty had two, if you count the one with the pants separately from the one with the kilt. And if you count field jackets separately, Spock also had one in "The Cage."

JTB: I forgot all about the dress uniforms -- those definitely count. And Semah, I'm just counting TOS uniforms, but yes, Worf had a number of them. I may just have to create a TNG uniform thread, too. -- RR
