Which Captain could you serve under best?

First choice, Picard. He would inspire me and greaten my potential. I would probably be an engineer but I'd probably hang out more with O'Brien than Geordi.

Second choice, a young engineer working under Scotty. He'd blow my mind with technological breakthroughs.

Let's include the usual suspects:
Kirk
Picard
Cisco
Janeway
Archer

If you want to include Spock because he achieved the rank of Captain or Sulu because he commanded the Excelsior or any other captain/commander of any starship/star base/space station, that's fine too.

(I really liked that Commodore Wesley...but I really don't want to serve under Commodore Decker ;) )

If you're a Starfleet officer, which captain would work best as your superior officer? It's not necessarily picking the best captain. There may be someone on the list you consider best but recognize that with your personality and theirs it would never work. Look at your personality and pick the captain that you would work the best with.

As a viewer I like Kirk. Would it work for me to serve under him? Not so sure about that.

Archer. He seemed to have a vested interest in encouraging growth in his crew. Wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty.

Spock, Tuvok, and T'Pol make BAD captains...is that racist?
TOS Spock had some problems with command, but I thought TWOK Spock would be a good captain. I think by then he was more comfortable with emotions and working with humans. I'm not sure he's my first choice, but he's on my list.

I'd enjoy serving under Kirk, Picard, and Sisko. All three men are disciplined, principled, brave, and dedicated career officers. The lines of authority seem to be most clearly drawn with Kirk. That can be a positive thing. Kirk is my favorite but the fact is more men seem to die on his missions.

It would depend on my age. If I were young and gung ho, I would choose Kirk because I would know he had hot Spock to reign him in. In my late 20's and most of my 30's I would choose Janeway because I know she could kick my ass and I would respect her. At my stage now, I would choose Picard because I would love him for his integrity and strength, and because I would love him I would gladly die for him, which would be rare at an older age. Picard is someone I would probably learn from best as a younger person...but, no one said who I would learn from best, only who I would serve under best.

Sisko and Kirk are about the same to me. I'd put the edge on Sisko by just a bit, but they both seem like good guys to work for, just want things done not too hung up protocol.

Janeway and Picard are next.

They're more or less the same to me, both seem hung up on protocol. Picard I would dislike moreso because of his higher than thou attitude. But on the other hand, you'd probably be working on the Big projects with Picard.

Archer to me feels like that boss you just take advantage of. You just do enough to get by, but don't really excel much. After 5 years of passing him through the hallways he still doesn't know your name, but kind of knows who you are. Always gives you this look.

After finally seeing Enterprise over the past year, I don't get that impression at all.

And judging by his actual crew, you're also not getting a promotion.

Archer seems humane enough that if you die on mission he would have the decency to send word to your family and explain how/why you died.

I can't imagine Picard or Kirk caring that much.

Probably Janeway. She seemed to find a really good balance of being a "hands on" Captain, yet maintaining a friendly, but not overly-familiar, relationship with her crew. And out of the "Big Five" Captains, Janeway always seemed the most willing to admit when she made a mistake, even if she'd only do it in private to Chakotay or Tuvok.
