Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration?

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

...And on that note Huckabee or Clinton are the best bets out of the front-runners. They havent changed their stance and have given clear postions in a plan that can work

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

Anyone know McCains view on manned spaceflight?

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

As others have indicated, the real problem is that few candidates seem to regard space to be a legitimate campaign issue, possibly because they don't realize that space exploration is a vital investment in our future, both for the United States, as well as the entire world.

Space advocate Keith Cowing of nasawatch.com has suggested one thing we can do about that:

Editor's note: If you are wondering why the presidential candidates don't spend more time talking about space exploration, here's your chance to try and change that situation and toss questions at them. Go to Politico.com and submit a question to the Democratic and Republican candidates for the CNN/Politico/LA Times debates at the end of the month. Imagine what would happen if they had a thousand questions from NASA Watch readers submitted ... its time for y'all to put up or shut up. Send in a question. Send in more than one question.

Here's the link to politico.com:

And NASA Watch:

If you do submit a question for the candidates in the debates, please post it here, as well!

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

For candidates of both parties:

"As president, what will you do to maintain American leadership in space exploration and to maintain this vital investment in our future?"

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

An encouraging new post on NASA Watch:

Editor's update: You've been busy! Lots of space questions have been submitted and are now up for voting. Several questions seem to be heading to the top of the pack. Perhaps the smart thing to do at this point is to try and vote for several of the most popular questions (as opposed to submitting new ones) so as to get them closer to the top of the list such that the topic has a chance to be discussed. Look at what you have done already - imagine what will happen if you all keep at this every day and get others to vote until the debates on 30 and 31 January! And make certain to vote at work and at home - and on your cellphone - and at Starbucks - anywhere you get Internet access. The poll site tracks your IP address when you vote - and you can only vote for a question once - regardless of deleting cookies, use of multiple browsers or computers, etc.

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

if you take them at their word, sounds like Huckabee and Hillary are the two most supportive of space programs.

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

For me, spaceflight is the coolest thing we do as a species.
In the Star Trek universe, society revolves around it.
Nobody has shattered dreams of being an astronaut because everybody is one.

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

Rudi Giuliani, speaking in Florida, called the impending five-year gap between the retirement of the Space Shuttle and the first flight of Orion "not acceptable." He didn't give a lot of specifics, but he was quoted in Florida Today: "America should be No. 1 and shouldn't have to be dependent on other countries."

And speaking of presidential candidates and space exploration, be sure to go to politico.com and vote to include space-related questions in the upcoming debates:

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

www.actionforspace.com is where to go to promote space to all of the candidates. Personally, I had felt like McCain was the most pro-space, but then he declined to accept the same invitation that Romney and Giuliani have accepted. I hope that www.actionforspace.com readers will act on the links and contact McCain to tell him that he needs to publicly acknowledge his support and plan for space exploration.

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

I think the space program has a pretty good return on investment and it helps with out technological development. The problem is the space program has gotten bloated. Joe Q Public doesn't seem to know about the space program even though a lot of the TV they watch would be impossible if not for the space program.

I think they should do an mission to a near earth asteroid with the constellation program and hype it up so that it is seen almost as important as landing on the moon.

Hopefully private space exploration will cause public understanding of the space program to increase.

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

I read an interview in Rolling Stone back when Edwards was just hinting about running in '08. He pretty much said that people in government begrudge NASA its tiny budget and turn a blind eye to the vast amount of $ soaked up by the military. He has since dedicated himself to patching up the US relations with the rest of the world-if he is elected-and in the same article(in the Stone) he referenced the "investment in the future" attitude that occured after Sputnik shocked the country which resulted in increased funding for education and scientific research. I think he would be a viable pro-space candidate. Sorry, I don't have a link to the article-I read actual paper copies of the magazine and then put them in the recycle bin at work. But what struck me was his attitude of disbelief that NASA's budget is questioned so often. It really stuck in my mind. I've heard some good things come out of other candidates' mouths but he won me over right there-since Gore won't run. :brickwall:

Re: Which Candidates are best for science/space exploration

Why not nominate Dubya to explore the interior of Jupiter?

But, anyway, why send them to explore? They could be put to much better use by using them to generate fuel, in the form of hot air.

Don't agree with anything Edwards says, much less Al Gore, but the last I heard was that NASA's budget was about .1% of the total annual GDP. So yeah,, the scorn that NASA gets over its budget is totally unwarranted, IMO.
