Which books in the "Fate of the Jedi" should I read/avoid?

Legacy already explained everything we need to know about that stuff. And since the One Sith don't really "emerge" until nearly eighty years after FOTJ, how important could anything in those books really be?

The Celestials, the ancient race that built Centerpoint Station and the Maw Cluster, and then mysteriously disappeared eons ago.
~reads down the list~ Yep, that's number 12 on the list of "Why I stopped reading the EU".

Seriously, Star Wars had to pull out the Lucasfilm version of the "Preservers". Just reeked of trying to explain how the magician does his tricks.

Well most people will say it isn't the outcome, it's the adventure that matters. But, yeah, it's a common complaint/problem with any story (for any franchise) that gets set between to "Fixed" points in a franchise's timeline. You know how it begins, you know how it ends/what the next 'future' part is. So the story really has to engage the audience and bring something unique to the table but still dovetail into the 'future' and the 'past.' Damn hard, and I'll say few stories ever pull it off.

Generally I agree with that sentiment, but I don't trust the people currently in charge of the novel line to provide us with a satisfactory adventure.

Despite the fact that we know something of SW's future with Legacy, we still don't know about the fates of the FOTJ-era Jedi. There's a lot of material to explore there. Plus, it could be interesting to see how all this leads up to Legacy. I wouldn't mind seeing the Sith-Imperial War for example.

I think many historical novels don't have a problem keeping readers engaged even though they know what the outcome will be. Same with historical movies. Sometimes it is about the journey and the unknown fates of the characters on those journeys.

^ Yeah I suspect that is why they will delve out the Legacy era novels to let us know what happens with some of the characters...and like was stated in the Lucas/Stewart interview thread, Lucas will kill Luke at a time of his choosing, even Ostrander stated that he didn't know if Cade was actually seeing the real Force Ghost Luke or not, although I took he was attempting to be cryptic.

I think we need a shake up in the author line up that Lucas Books/DelRay have given us over the last few years. I'm partial to James Luceno myself. I think it would do the EU some good to search out new science fiction talent to depict adventures in the Star Wars universe other than the same old gang. Something needs to change soon because they're going to continue to lose readers.

I'm with you on Luceno. From the books I've read he seems to have a good take on how to weave both the EU and movies together into a nice tapestry.

Though I do think DelRay is opening up their SW books to more authors. You've got Christie Golden for FOTJ. Also Death Troopers (Joe Schreiber) and Crosscurrent (Paul Kemp) were written by new guys. There's the current Clone Wars noves written by Karen Miller. And occasionally they bring in Stover, Zahn, Drew Karpyshyn, Sean Williams, and Michael Reaves to write. Jonathan J. Miller is doing the Lost Tribe e-books and is scheduled to do a novel for his upcoming Knight Errant comic book series. Though I do agree in the sense that they need to give others shots to write their premiere books (the ongoing Skywalker saga stuff). There's been too much Denning and Allston for the last 17 premiere novels or so (Dark Nest, LOTF, FOTJ).

After reading Darth Bane trilogy, would've loved to see what Drew K. could've added to Darth Caedus's development. Also, would've liked to see what Luceno could've done for the Second Civil War in LOTF and how epic he could've made the events in FOTJ.

I think NJO and the pre-ROTS Clone Wars novels did a better job of adding new or different writers into the mix.

Those authors though are what I'm talking about...they've worked on the EU now for the last few years at least, and most of them I can take and leave...still think new blood needs to be injected.

Denning and Allston write the good books in the regular series. If they were gone I would really fret for the line. The new authors never turn out to be any good and Zahn refuses to participate in the storylines.

I've only ever liked Zhan's original Thrawn trilogy to be honest...didn't think much of the Hand of Thrawn duology or Outbound Flight. I'm slightly intrigued to see what his follow up book is going to be...I've forgotten now already but think it was mentioned at the Del Ray panel at comic con. I'm reading Sean Williams Knights of the Old Republic video game novelization and am enjoying it so far.

Nothing was as good as the original trilogy, but the others have been good for the most part. The only one I found particularly uninteresting was "Survivor's Quest" because it was so small and insular a story. But I thought "Outbound Flight" was really good.

Thrawn is one of those characters that works better with less exposure. Sort of like Boba Fett: The bad ass is watered down the more you get to know about the character. Plus Thrawn, who could actually defeat the Republic, sort of loses some of his threat when he turns into yet just another villain.

Yeah I agree with that...now I remember Zhan's follow up book was going to be about Thrawn. I didn't like "Hand of Thrawn" because of the clone angle...I have to be honest though I only really read the first of the two books and stopped because I didn't like it and read a plot synopsis somewhere for the second book lol. Grand Admiral Thrawn along with Admiral Daala are among the very few EU contributions that I actually have enjoyed and consider a fan of.

I too am one who will advise not to pick them up...I've tried the first two and they felt really flat and devoid of any real interest. Not really been this disappointed in a Star Wars series in a long time.

I read Outcast (and actually got it signed by Alston in Chicago shortly before his heart episode) but I didn't really enjoy it, to be honest. I've decided to go paperback-only for the series. And while I own the second book I haven't read it.

So has anyone read Apocalypse yet? If so, what were your thoughts on it? It seems like we've been waiting forever for this book to come out. I have it in que at the library.

^ I didn't think it came out for another week.

I've enjoyed the series, even the first books with Luke and Ben exploring other Force sects. Personally I've found the Jaina parts to be generally uninteresting, though to be fair I've never really liked any of the Solo kids.
