Yeah, but some actors are type-casted. Now when I see Sulu, I get a craving for White Castles.

Actors are only typecast when the audience is too stupid to accept them as ACTORS, even though they accepted them for the one part they've typecast them as.

Kirk and Scotty. Pine looks nothing like Kirk

I find that to be a very good thing.

and the scene of Scotty in the trailer was really cringeworthy

Good accent, kind of eccentric seeming... was really good. Can't wait to see the rest of the convo and see what the context was.

Why is it a good thing? They have someone that looks like Spock. You might as well have made a new cast of characters instead of this. The accent sounded nothing like Scotty

Well, none of them much resembles their TV counterparts, so in that respect, nobody fits. Of course, if this is a reboot -- which Abrams says it is not -- that doesn't matter -- but as it's not a reboot, it probably does.

In terms of matching character, though, while Pine is a bit too androgynous jock boy for Kirk, his gestures seem Kirk-like, and that's a good thing. Quinto, though, seems too angry -- he has the tight-lipped, furled-brow of an anime character. The brief snippet of Urban makes me think arboreal animal -- lemur? sloth? -- but I'll reserve judgment till I see more. Pegg, whom I like, may actually end up making Scotty, whom I like, annoying. Saldana is cute but lacks the slightly regal beauty of Uhura -- she's more like the fit girl at the gym who sells water bottles and is tired of being hit on. Poor Yelchin and Cho get so little time in that trailer that I have no idea whether they'll work, though I like Cho. I agree that Yelchin is kind of weird looking, what with the pale skin, spooky eyes and odd, vinelike blond hair. Speaking of which, Greenwood is unkempt and unimpressive as Pike, but I've never been impressed with him so I may be biased. I'm a little scared of Ben Cross, though, who just seems far too villainous in appearance and disposition compared to the great Mark Lenard.

I think Captain Robert April has done a pretty good job being the new Stewey. Pretty seamless transition.

I disagree. He's nothing like Stewey. He's not even from Liverpool and I'll bet he couldn't do an authentic Scouser accent to save his life.

I am going to word it this way:

J.J. Abrams wanted Simon Pegg in this film. Period.

Which is why Pegg was probably given leeway to interpret the role of Scotty in his own unique way.

After all, the audience members who are already fans of Simon Pegg want to see "Simon Pegg" and his brand of humor, not a dead-on interpretation of a Canadian actor with a faux-Scottish accent.

^
^^ You're right. I think Pegg is single-handedly delivering the young-to-middle aged UK male audience (and many UK females). That's exactly why Abrams cast him.

Surprisingly, while Yeltsin looks nothing like Koenig, I really like him in the role of Chekov ... he really looks Russian!

so apparently everyone likes Karl Urban and Zachary Quinto as McCoy and Spock, respectively.

Does that mean they're the best? or do we need another poll for that....

No, I have already said Uran looks nothing like McCoy and his one line in the trailer was over the top and seemed forced
Spocks hair looks funny too

Can't say, haven't seen the movie yet.
I'll get back to you in half a year.

Well, obviously, but that's not the point of the poll, is it?

It's based on what we know of these actors' previous bodies of work compared to the classic characters we've known for the last forty-odd years and how well those two mesh.

Which would tell us... what?

To use Star Wars as an example: The three new movies had - through the board - excellent actors, whose 'bodies of work' are held in pretty high esteem. But in these movies almost all of them deliverd work that was... below what one would expect of them.

Make of that what you will.
