It's set before, they should look younger. And it was Sulu I was thinking of mainly

George Takei born 1937 - 29 in 1966
John Cho born 1972 - 36 in 2008.
So in other words 10 years older than a young Sulu.
and almost twice the age of young chekov!
Part of it is we saw them grow up on screen. Sulu in where no man... looks so godamm young!
The opposite has been a frequent complaint, actually: that many of them don't look old enough. Frontier might be able to turn up photos of that sort for comparison, though; he's got lots, if you've seen his "Old & Rare Photos" threads in GTD and TOS.
The one I have the biggest reservations about is Quinto. He looks okay, but I've seen nothing that suggests he'll have the same manner and commanding voice that Nimoy had, which is funny, since he'll be playing Spock alongside Nimoy. But I'll get over that, and if I can get over that, I can get over Chekov's hair, Zoe Saldana being more of a hottie that Nichelle Nichols, and Pine being as much of a pretty boy as Shatner was.
i would assume nimoy would coach him a bit in that respect
