Where was Carol Marcus

It would be easy to pretend the last film never happened. Very little that happened in it had any influence on events here.

Even though she wasn't needed, some continuity with regards to her, or at least a mention would've been good because the last we saw her was on the bridge with the rest of the crew at the end in Into Darkness as they were warping out to their five year mission.

Maybe she went to start Project Genesis years ahead of schedule.

Kor

I spotted what I interpreted as an Easter egg reference to the Genesis planet animation from Carol's proposal in TWOK in the end credits. Perhaps that's more than just a simple shout-out, but in fact a hint that what you've suggested is exactly what's happening.

I like the idea that in this timeline, it was Chapel that got pregnant and left.
Actually, after thinking things over, Carol being on maternity leave (which I initially just meant as a bit of a joke) really does work perfectly, and could help explain Kirk's funk at the start of the movie. So he's in a mood, his birthday is coming, and with this one he's turning a year older than his dad got. Add in the fact that he's now a dad himself (or going to be one) and that, like his own father before him he won't be around for his own child's life could certainly explain his misery and desire for a ground assignment. I suppose you can still have this with Chapel, but IMO it works better if it's something more recent, to fit with the five year mission losing its appeal. And it even ties into Kirk's observation in his log about romances developing and failing among the crew, a matter he could relate to.

Hmm, maybe this was why Carol wasn't even mentioned in the movie, the subject very easily leads to distracting side stories which have no real relevance to the movie's plot.

For whatever it's worth, Carol disappears from the IDW tie-in comics somewhere in early-mid 2261 (judging from the stardates) - right around the time Prime Universe Carol got pregnant.

As much as I would have liked to see Carol Marcus return for this movie, I don't really see her fitting into the story. But they could have at least mentioned her, so that we get a hint what happened to her.

Another thing I was wondering about was the absence of Science Officer 0718 ... but since he was essentially the embodyment of the Enterprise, it would probably have made the story too complicated for the general audience to follow.

I'd like to think she spent a few months on board the ship (with Kirk) and then decided to go into peaceful scientific research (vowing to only do good after her father's anger) and eventually slipped into the same kind of position as she did in the prime timeline.

She could always go into deep space to do research, go insane and turn into an alien entity that returns to hunt the crew of the Enterprise.

Oh wait........

I know they said they could not think of anything for her to do in this movie but she's a weapons expert and they were dealing with an ancient alien weapon - that's sort of exactly what her character does....

Mind you, they got rid of Chapel, a bio-medical researcher, for similar reasons in STiD and just let McCoy carry out the medical research instead. It isn't that they can't think of anything for the characters to do, it's that they don't want to pay a supporting actress a lot of money to do something one of the other characters can do instead.
