Where to go after TNG?

Oh. You're mentally retarded. That explains everything!

Wasn't going to say it... but those were my thoughts exactly.

I don't. Some people don't like TOS. It's that frigging simple.

I have a hard time believing someone can like Star Trek: The Franchise but not like Star Trek.

It's kinda like: "I like chocolate cake... but I don't like chocolate."

It happens.

Some people hate tomatoes but like tomato ketchup.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it's good to get a debate going

I was born in 1985. I grew up watching TNG, DS9, and VOY. TOS was never on TV, and I never had any opportunity to see it until I was much older (like, last year on Netflix). Compared to the more recent series, TOS is horribly dated, has terrible FX, over-the-top acting, and most of its stories are boring to me.

I guess the acting in Star Trek: The Original Series would seem over-the-top when you were fed the steady stream of cardboard acting that permeated most of Modern Trek. The special effects are a product of their time... Trek was a very expensive venture for its time. The effects you enjoy today owe a lot to those people who created effects for Star Trek: The Original Series.

The stories were great and Modern Trek owes a lot to those writers' from the 1960's.

Just because things were good at the time doesn't mean I am required to enjoy them now.

It's perfectly okay for people to not like the original Star Trek.

You should watch TOS until you like it.

 that's pretty much what I did! I didn't like TOS for quite a while (probably to do with the acting). But after a while I really liked the stories they told and the way the characters played off each other.

I'd recommend getting the remastered episodes for those of you who don't like the original effects (although voyager had some crappy effects sometimes that could be worse than TOS)

We are not turning this thread into a TOS mud slinging contest. Everyone's opinion is valid here. If you disagree with what someone has said you can debate it like civilized people. If not, I will close this thread.

And BillJ quoting and then agreeing with a flame that someone was warned for is not a good idea. Don't think I won't warn you the next time you do it. Consider this a friendly. If the situation presents itself again you need to walk away and leave it alone.

Too soon.

Tone 'er down a notch, Sport. ;). You can cut the tension in here with a knife!

I don't see how someone who dislikes TOS couldn't enjoy the other series. They all have differences in tone, level of serialization, characters etc. And besides, no one can just decide they like something.

But the later shows share so much with Star Trek in tone and structure.

That means the later shows have a lot in common with both TOS and each other. If someone said that they don't like Voyager, would you think they probably wouldn't like the other series either?

And the shows are not identical. They are similar, mostly due to being part of the same genre, but not identical. The subtle differences matter a lot when it comes to people's tastes.

Now make a list of everything that appeared in Modern Trek that originated in Star Trek: The Original Series, it's a pretty daunting list.

Star Trek is the prime ingredient to everything that followed.

That is exactly why every Trek fan should respect TOS, but respecting something is not the same thing as liking it.

While there wouldn't be modern Trek without TOS, modern Trek can easily be understood without watching TOS. Even ENT Season 4 is enjoyable if you don't care much about TOS.

It's not about what they have in common. It's about how they're different.

There are a lot of aspects of TOS that I respect, but when it comes to actually sitting down and watching the show, I find the acting terrible and pacing of the stories really inconsistent. Honestly, if I were reading the TOS scripts, I'd probably enjoy them a lot more. But TV is a visual medium, and I just don't enjoy watching that show!

It's the same reason why, while I love TNG, I pretty much can't stand the majority of the first 2 seasons. It's the same reason why, while I love the new Doctor Who, I fall asleep any time I try to watch the original.

And only people who shove TOS down other people's throats care at all. This has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the enjoyment of watching the show. You can acknowledge it for that, but that's not the same thing as liking the show minute-to-minute.
