Where to go after TNG?

Hello. i am 4 episodes away from finishing season 7 of TNG and was wondering another place to go in the universe now. I can't stand the original series. I have season 1 of enterprise and i think that is ok to good, but i am not sure whether i want to continue in the series. The concept of voyager seems cool but i don't know where to start. And i someone told me the DS9 is only cool because of the Cardassians. What would you recommend? and I can not stress enough how much i dislike TOS.

You were terribly misinformed. Cardassians are VERY FAR from the only good part of DS9. If you like story arcs, continuity, fleshing out of the races used, and something truly different from every other ST show, watch Emissary. The show started during S6 of TNG, so it's a good place to go to next.

First off, we have to question your taste...

As a big fan of pretty much the entire franchise, with Star Trek being my favorite, I say your best bet is to continue on with Enterprise. Season 2 is very rough, minus a few very good episodes, but seasons 3 and 4 are pretty entertaining.

Yeah, you were misinformed about DS9..... I used to be a big TNG fan, due to it bringing me into the series and hooked on the characters..... but DS9 just surpasses TNG in so many ways.... well by the time season 3 starts up. The first couple of seasons are too busy setting up the scene that it kind of drags a bit, but those seasons are still good...... just by Season 3, everything just improves on every angle.

Don't get me wrong, I still love TNG, but it's just a hair shy, being my 2nd favorite.... very close 2nd.

The Cardassians are very cool. DS9 is an exciting, fun series, the best of all of them. I'd advise you to skip most of S1 except if you found ENT S1 "okay to good," then you should find S1 of DS9 "okay to occasionally brilliant." And it just gets better from there. Even the worst of DS9 is no worse than what you've seen in ENT S1.

You could skip straight to the S2 finale of Enterprise. That's where the season-long Xindi arc starts, and I cannot say enough how brilliant the series gets at that point. S3 and S4 are both very different from the first two seasons, but in a different way. But seeing that you consider S1 to be "OK to good", I'd still recommend that you watch the series in order.

Meh. DS9 is my least favorite. But TOS is my favorite, so maybe you would like DS9 (and if you go with that please start at the beginning.)

Why do you hate TOS so much?

If you want to be safe, do the TNG movies next if you haven't already.

Whoever told you DS9 is no good is nuts. DS9 is, along with TNG the best thing that ever happened to Star Trek. I can't recommend it enough. In second place behind those two is TOS. I recommend you give that a second look. You won't be sorry.

I could never get into DS9. There are maybe 4-5 episodes I like but that is about it.

If I were the OP I would go with Voyager next.

I'm curious why the OP "doesn't like TOS." Depending on what those reasons are, our recommendations to watch DS9 might be wildly off target.

I would also go with DS9. For one it's the chronological successor of TNG. Second, as others have pointed out this is in many ways the high point of the franchise. It's the most mature, sophisticated and developed form of Star Trek, especially the last 4 seasons. However, its all good. Even season 1 (which people tend to rate lowest) holds up quite well and is on par with most of TNG and Voyager.

DS9 from season 3-6 is amazing. Probably the best sci-fi show in the last 30 years. I wish it would have just ended at season 6.

Be aware that, for one reason or another, this board leans Niner. DS9 tends to win the "best Trek series" polls, and even for those that prefer one of the other series, DS9 is often in second place.


That being said, you should watch DS9, it's the best! The Cardassians are good, there's no denying that, but most things in DS9 are good, so give it a try and you might just be surprised.

TOS is by far the best. And it's really not even close. But TOS may be the best sci fi series ever made. DS9 is the best of the next gen crews.
