After all these years I just noticed that the science and operations insignias flipped between Where No Man Has Gone Before and the regular production episodes. And that The Cage insignias actually match up with the regular production episodes.

Been watching for thirty plus years and just noticed this lil' blip...

Yeah - I think the original intention was that the insignias had something to do with the ranking system. For example, there were other green/gold shirts but Kirk and Spock were only ones of that colour that had the command-star insignia...
