Where is the Starfleet Museum supposed to be?

Although it technically didn't happen in the way first presented, when Voyager returned home at the beginning of "Endgame" it is stated that she became an exhibit at the Presidio on earth, which would mean in San Francisco.

Also in "First Flight", Robbinson said his escape pod from the NX-Alpha would made a good addition to the museum, which probably means that it already existed on Earth even at this early stage.

Picard also mentioned that there is a Constitution Class starship in the fleet museum, which would indicate that by his time it is located in space.

I should hope so, because there's no room in Washington DC with all of those war memorial monuments!

I'd guess there is a ground-based museum and a space-based museum. The ground-based museum would have holographic recreations of launch ceremonies, hold blueprints and whatnot, while the space museum holds the actual ships

I believe the Constitution-class starship was placed in an oversized replica of the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum's gift shop.

^^^Actually, change that to cry out loud. I remember when the Enterprise held a place of honor right by the lunar module from the moon landing. Now its been reduced to an oddity in a gift shop. What a sad ending for a grand lady.

^Well, at least that's better than what's happened to the poor NX-01. :(

:wtf: It's a freaking TV show!!!

Ummm, I'm pretty sure he was just joking around. You are aware of jokes aren't you?

Why have a spaceborne element to the museum? Surely it would be simple enough to lower the actual ships to a planetary surface (they all should be able to do it under their own power, really), and perhaps house them underground. Most could be buried the way the Gideonites apparently did it, while a select few might be placed in large caves where they can be seen from the outside, too.

Or would the intent be that the museum pieces can still sail out, perhaps for sightseeing tours, perhaps as the last last line of Earth's defenses...?

We're talking a shit ton of real estate here. Plenty of room in space where people could take a tour shuttle and visit.
