Where have all the average people gone?

We equate personal value with monetary success and/or status through varying outlets. Which is fallacious, if you don't mind me saying so, who is worthier, the talented billionaire who kills millions because other people agree with him or the average loner who never did anything to hurt anyone? Ergo, someones worth should be assessed on their character, which doesn't go down well with people fixated with labels and instantaneousness.

I think it's because our standards concerning averageness have been seriously dumbed down. Nowadays you're considered above average if you're capable of forming a coherent sentence.

Considering the amount of phenomenally stupid people I run into on a regular basis, I can only assume that writing your name semi-legibly is the main requirement for the honors program these days.

Ever wonder that?

Seems like everyone's kid is always an honor student, in the gifted program or something. If not that then they are the star of their sports teams and scored so many goals last game and the coach loves them etc etc.

Where are the average people? I wonder if you polled people how many would actually admit to being average? I mean it is no secret that humans can be pretty egotistical. Most people like to think they have accomplished more and are more important then those around them. I really don't mean that in a mean way. It's just the truth.
They are the average people in a lot of instances. That is what happens when the bar is lowered--everything suffers whether it be educational standards, job requirements, music, culture, politics, journalism etc. How else do you explain someone as mentally deficient as Bush getting elected twice.

So is this a bad time to tell Docbrown that I attended several gifted schools, and that I consistently had the highest scores every quarter from 7th to 11th grade?

You tend to hear a lot more about exceptional people than average people. Nothing surprising about that, it has always been that way.

Who wants to watch a movie or read a book that's like "Then Joe Blow got home from work and watched TV for a few hours in silence..."

I'd kill for average, but then I'd still only be an average killer.

By average I mean "normal". Not "watches American Idol and enjoys shopping at Wal-Mart". Aw, Shit, that is normal, isn't it?

I like all the vice presidents.

The company I work for has vice presidents who have no staff. "Barb is the VP of Marketing" really means "Barb is the marketing lady."

And media outlets, especially magazines, don't seem to have many writers or reporters any longer: they have associate editors.

Joe, associate VP

Don't you mean:

Joe, Deputy Associate Vice President of Superfluous Management Position Reduction

But you were going to be the one who broke the trend! Now the world will never know...

"And I sat down, glass of water in hand, as I prepared to conquer the television remote control. With an effort that would defy even God I grabbed it, clenching it tightly in my sweaty hand, determined to turn on the tube. I smashed the button and on flickered the device, sending me into a state of glee that washed over my body. An image of a happy man and woman appeared on the screen and I only threw back my head and cried out in apain so deep I cannot describe it.

'Why, God, whhhhhhhhhhhhy?!'

And I did sob.

And then I signed onto theTrekBBS and did sob even harder."

I don't know -- I think some of these parets are just buying "Honor Student" stickers from websites and having them custom lettered.

(if only their kid had been smart enough to think of that...)

In the context of the OP... hello my name is DangerMouse and I'm average.

Yesterday as I was leaving work I picked up a paper bag with loads of my stuff in it but didn't realise part of it was trapped in my drawer so as I walked away the bag ripped in half and all my stuff fell out and I had a tantrum and the picture editor had to go to his desk to get another bag for me cause I was stamping my foot and sqealing...

Yep no A-grades here! :D

Edit... actually I've just had a thought. I think this makes me 'special' - as in not in a good way!

Not really. I mean just take a peek at any organization or place. There are tons of average people and a few standouts. By definition that is true.

^^ I did. Of course, I was older than you guys and into that stuff. We never sang it in school, though. The only "Peace Movement" song I remember singing in Grade School was "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream."

I don't know, but if educational shorts featured on MST3K have taught me anything, it's that the 1950s were full of them.

Conform... conform...
