I do love the DSC phaser and communicator designs. Then again, I'm always nostalgic for the classics.
I do love the phasers. And the fact they erase lasers from history. *watches as his copy of The Cage starts to become more transparent*

Yeah that doesn't really work for me. This is 10 years before "Where No Man Has Gone Before", 2 years after "The Cage", and 101 years after the ENT episodes "Terra Prime".You are getting visual continuity, from ENT. Everything is built from that design point and its pretty easy to see.
It's 2017. So, no.Yeah that doesn't really work for me. This is 10 years before "Where No Man Has Gone Before", 2 years after "The Cage", and 101 years after the ENT episodes "Terra Prime".
Visually speaking things should be much more in line with the TOS look.
That argument doesn't hold that much water for me. They do not have to make panels out of cardboard or fake food that is clearly colored rudimentary shapes made of of foam. You can take the ideas and update them while still maintaining the over all look and feel. But that's neither here nor there. It's 2017. So, no.

The look from TOS is very 1960's. Making the sets from modern materials but keeping the same designs wouldn't make it any less 1960's.That argument doesn't hold that much water for me. Other than setting it in an alternate time I don't recall any explanations. My conversations with @Mirror Mirror was really just about my own personal hang ups when it comes to continuity. It's a brain thing. Little stuff I can generally excuse away but sweeping visual changes is another thing entirely. They even went out of their way to explain the Kelvin Timeline changes away.

That's why in 1979 they updated the look for TMP rather than keep the 1960's aesthetic.

I think that test footage must have made them rethink a few things. Though I did like the sleeveless variant on the crewwoman.(OMG where's her rank insignia!!!!!!^^
The 'changed the look ONLY because they were now shooting a feature film = Widescreen aspect ratio. It wasn't because "Oh, the previous design looked too 1960ies.
Want proof? Loot at the yest footage for what would have been the "Star Trek: Phase II" TV series (had they not decided to go the full motion picture direction:

Pretty much looks like TOS. Why? TV and not feature film.

Does not matter if it works for you are not. This is how it is. Once they made ENT not look like the 19430's it wrote out the 1960 TOS style. TOS looks old and dated, ENT did not look old and dated, which was why so many hated it as it made TOS look as silly as it looks.
What we have is a setting that looks like it came after ENT .

One time, twelve years later... in an emergency situation. Lorca orders it like it is a normal thing. Burnham doesn't come across as phased at all that it is ordered.
I've heard he goes outside without a coat on cold days.Didn't Scotty also do it without difficulty in "A Piece of the Action"?
Besides, Spock's reasoning for why it had "rarely" been done before came off as very contrived to me, written for the sake of drama. All transports carry the "risk" that he suggested. Even if we accept it, does Lorca come off as someone who routinely adheres to the safe course of action to you?
I've heard he goes outside without a coat on cold days.
Lorca's mother disagrees.Impossible. According to Spock, "venturing outside without a coat in chilly conditions has rarely been done because of the danger involved. Very few such incidents in Starfleet records."
I think that's how the quote went.
He does it for the air of mystery, at least according to him, which was a refreshing meta character moment.I can't wait until someone reinvents the long lost technology of sunglasses for Captain Lorca, so he can turn the ship's lights up.
