where are all the Germans?

as germany has quite something to do with mankind being in space at all i wonder why that is solely reflected in the city of new berlin which btw has a ridiculuos idea of germany heritage. mazurka for instance got nothing to do with germany at all. lederhosen and maßkrüge are bavarian and ridiculed by most germans (but for americans germany IS bavaria). that's like reducing the us to texas.
  • is there any noteworthy german character in the whole of trek? by that i mean germans not americans with german names.
  • are there any ships besides uss oberth (and her class)?
  • there are also next to know referrences to german scientific achievements
there may be some but i can't remeber any and i am looking for that kind of stuff for 45 years now - tos was shown from 1972 on dubbed as a children's show on german tv.


... kraut is no insult here as i'm not only a kraut but a bavarian kraut (kinda bayrisch kraut)

Might be a danger of starting to split hairs here. Yes Einstein became American in later life but if we are talking about citizenship in the legal sense the question arises whether such a concept is still relevant by the 23rd century. Is there such a thing as "Germany" in the Federations Earth?

Incidentally are you quite sure about the thread title? Searching for the term you have used seems quite specifically to return references to it being derogatory.....

of course not - they explained why picard had an english accent (and pissed of the french in the process)

Then you see my point, how meaningful the modern concept of nationality is in context is pretty nebulous.
 
Also, Odo disguised himself as a German in Little Green Men. Surely that counts?! ;)

call it 'of german descent' then.

these shows have probaly more alien personell than terrans of non-american descent

who else? i think i remeber a blueshirted redshirt with what was supossed to be a german accent in tos. he definately had a german name.

i wouldn't even mind if they all spoke with an american accent but the names should be fitting, e.g. a lt trevor c. kreutzpointer is clearly not from somewhere in what is now bavaria.

i's also accept it if there's a hint in canon that large sways of europe, africa, asia and the whole of australia were obliterated in ww III.

this thread is not about demanding a german character it's about an explanation why there are none.

also a uss wegener would be nice (and make it a scientific vessel. please.

Kayla Detmer from Discovery is presumably German. (In the tie-in novel it is specifically confirmed she's German, not just an American with German name. I know, not canon, but unless it get's later contradicted on screen we can safely assume it is true.)

got no idea about books and canon - but detmer is a name the fits into the düsseldorf area (where she's allegedly from)

keyla is not a german name but we have a lot of kevins now, so she's on the list

There are quite a bit more. From top of my head LaForge, O'Brien, Bashir, Sato and Reed. And of course there are plenty of people whose ancestry is not specified. Seven's real name is Annika Hansen, but I'm not sure whether it was ever said if she was actually from Scandinavia or just an American with a Scandinavian name.
 
whilke laforge was born in mogadishu i think he's of canam descent (check his and his parents' full names)

none of them is african, la forge is french - and methinks his ancestors being enslaved shouldn't count because in the end we'd be all from a place that is momentarily a part of tanzania. his physognomy is (as with most 'african americans') westafrican (that's where the slaves were taken)

the others are indeed not canam as is keiko o'brien. do we count molly?

the guy who drove him out was an austrian and making that guy a german needed a lot of trickery as i'd been illegal otherwise.

i'm willing to count him as a hologram from switzerland ;)

He changed his citizenship specifically because of German political developments, the achievements of which were touched upon in "Patterns of Force." There's something German, no?

the first time he changed it was to get a job at the suiss customs' office (he retained that for all of his life)

He maintained affilations with one or other Laender throughout that period. Citizenship was not specifically tied to the Kaiserreich. Your loss.
