- Director signed in spring or early summer 2014.

- Preproduction from the director's signing through the second half of 2014 and into early 2015.

- Production starts in the first quarter of 2015.

- Post production from mid/late 2015 to release in summer 2016.

That's within the range of the standard timeline for a summer tentpole release.

We'll get there when we get there. I know everyone wants them to do it for the 50th, but I just don't see the big deal. I wouldn't mind waiting for 2017.

Sorry, but I've got to disagree. Perhaps because I was actually a witness to the 1966 premiere, I definitely feel that a film coinciding with the 50th anniversary would be a 'big deal.'

Just as TUC was released as a 25th anniversary event, the 13th movie should be a 50th anniversary event.

Unlike TUC, the movie should incorporate an anniversary logo. I would love to see a nicely designed '50 years' splash screen at the start.

There were similar tentpole markings to mark the 75th birthday of Superman for Man Of Steel.

They are said to be circling 11/18/16, which looks wide open if the schedule I'm peeking at is up to date.

I think I'd still prefer a summer release. Into Darkness held it's own against much stiffer summer competition than the first one faced.

Obviously the movie won't be released on September 8 since big budget blockbusters don't get September releases, but a November release allows September 8 to be a big marketing blitz, like a new trailer or even a clip from the movie.

Conveniently, Paramount has the movie rights to another of the world's largest sci-fi franchises which has a fiftieth anniversary coming up.

Which franchise is that?

September is one of the worst box office months of the year. And you can't release a big budget blockbuster then and expect to do great business because of the relative lack of competition. It doesn't work that way. September attendance levels would struggle to deliver box office good enough for a film of this budget level.

Yeah, a big budget blockbuster will not be released in September, not if anyone expects it to make money. A November release will allow September 8 to be a media blitzkrieg to promote the hell out of the movie.

Yesterday at Emerald City Comicon, Karl Urban confirmed a 2016 release date as part of a 50th anniversary celebration. And he confirmed that a director is signed but would not reveal the name.

I'm pretty sure that will be a great marketing campaign in Star Wars VII. Why wouldn´t they do that in Star Trek?

The 50th anniversary comes once in a lifetime, half a century of its existence. It is one of the most popular scifi TV shows.
I belive Paramount see this as an opportunity to get extra publicity.
This is a franchise that is about exploring new places and discovering new stuff.
I hope they can continue along this road which I feel is the right one.
I would like to see Andorians, Tellarites, Klingons, new alien life forms, etc.
People love a good mystery too.

STID started filming around February 2012 and was released May 2013. Likewise, the new Avengers movie started filming this February and it's due to be released May 2015. So if they want to do a May 2016 release, they could start filming February 2015. Although as long as they start filming by September 2015 they'll still make 2016, even though at that point it would have to be a December 2016 release.

If the last two movies are anything to go by, the name of the director won't be announced until shortly before the beginning of filming. There might be casting news a little sooner than that, but expect any story and character details to stay murky until much closer to the release date (whenever that finally gets nailed down.)
