When someone who likes the new universe says asks "Wasn't that supposed to be there and not there?". This form of questioning will bring about the Ron D. Moore effect where the current writers will state "Star Trek has become drowned in a sea of lore and history to which we cannot write" and therefore must be rebooted.

Best advice? If you like your current universe, ignore everything that's come before. No continuity and no progression.
