When will Steve Carell switch to dramatic acting?

Seems like most big-name comedic stars eventually switch at some point in their careers over to more dramatic roles. Robin Williams, Tom Hanks and Jim Carrey all quickly come to mind and to a certain extent so does Will Smith.

So, if history rings true, sooner or later current big-name funny man Steve Carell (40 Year Old Virgin, The Office, Get Smart) will want to take his hand at more dramatic acting.

When do you think this will occur?

My guess would be whenever he gets bored doing what he's doing now, or when a great script comes along and some producer or director wants him. Pretty vague answer, but he's been plenty successful so far as a comedic actor, so it's hard to say.

True. IIRC, the Epic Fail both dramaticly, creatively, and word-of-mout... ive... ly of "Joe vs. The Volcano" "did in" Hanks' comedic movie career and he switched over to doing primarirly dramatic roles. Three years later he won an Oscar for Philadelphia.

Robin Williams bounce back and forth but seems to be taking "more serious" roles presently.

It'll be interesting to see how Carell's career goes.

Wasn't Carey's "Bruce Almighty" MOSTLY a serious movie with fantastic elements to it? He was mostly a normal guy, except having been put in such a broad circumstance.

I didn't see "Evan Almighty", so I haven't as much of an "informed opinion" here as I'd normally like to, but assuming mostly the same people, shouldn't THAT have been his first? Of course, "Bruce Almighty" came more than a decade AFTER "The Truman Show".

I wouldn't categorize his suicidal role in "Little Miss Sunshine" as comedic (though it had funny elements to it)

It was dramatic, I'd say. But it was just one quirky drama among the list of other comedy movies. For example, Robin Williams did something similar in The World According to Garp.

Carell strikes me as the rare actor who knows what he does well and is perfectly happy not to screw up his career by "evolving".

I guess you don't count Little Miss Sunshine or Dan in Real Life as dramatic acting. I'll grant you the latter is a bit fluffy, but not the former.
