When was the last time you saw Star Trek The Motion Picture?

Last time I actually saw the old first Star Trek movie was like pretty much back in 2002 or 2003 when the Collectors Edition DVDs were a big deal for at least the first 4 old Star Trek movies

Watched the DE on Amazon a couple of months ago. I watch it a couple of times a year. The only time I've seen the theatrical cut since the DE came out was in a theater 2 years ago for the 40th anniversary. It was disappointing for me. Wished it had been the DE on the big screen.

A few months ago, when my girlfriend insisted she wanted to watch it after seeing the other TOS movies, even if I had told them she wouldn’t like it.

She didn’t like it.

Funnily enough, she liked all the others but TWoK.

Watched the DE a couple of months ago trying to introduce the TOS movies to my 5 year old daughter. She didn't like it, but liked the rest of them.

can sympathize: I got introduced to ST more or less at that age with TMP, when my father bought the then new TOS boxed set, I remember hating the first movie (booring, the wormhole scene seemed to go on forever) but loving the other ones the following nights.

Probably about 2 years for me. One of those occasional Star Trek marathons...

I still like some things about TMP - though, yes - the pacing is way off. For the time, excellent effects work, and of course, excellent music from Jerry Goldsmith.

For me, it was when they did the anniversary screening in the theaters. I haven't gotten around to watching it again at home since then. I might give the DE a revisit soon. But I generally don't like the look of upscaled DVD on a newer, bigger, hi-def TV.

Saw it on the big screen for the first time last year or the year before. It really needs to be seen that way at least once to fully appreciate it.

I assume that would have been the anniversary screening in 2019.
It was... glorious.

I can't say that seeing it that way made the film flawless to me, but it definitely gave me new appreciation for the experience it was capable of being under the right conditions.

just the other night saw bits of TMP on the film 4 Trekathon.
on the big screen? in 87 as part of a I-IV all day trek showing.
the next time will be when the HD DC comes out on bluray.

I revisit it about every six months. The theatrical edition on Blu-ray.
I try and do the same, but it’s probably been more like 18mo since the last time for me. It’s my favorite of the original cast movies.

So my 6 yo son has trouble sitting through movies. Always gets fidgety. The first movie he could sit through and track? “Cloud Star Trek” (TMP).

During quarantine, we went through a period of 2-3 months where we watched it, and I am not kidding, 3-4 times per week. It became our comfort film. We still watch it periodically - it’s the only Star Trek film he requests by name. He does this with no other movies.

It’s a transformative bonding film for us. He always had a challenge putting himself into character’s shoes and tracking their motives, but we often pause and he asks, “I wonder what Kirk is thinking right now? What is V’Ger feeling?”

We have also progressed through the stage where we discuss the plot, to the visuals, to the errors, and now we point out the TIIIINY continuity stuff or in-universe questions. Why do jr bridge officers not have chairs? Why does Kirk’s front door open on his bed? Why is the control to magically put clothes on the person in the shower not IN the shower but instead on the wall by the door?

The world may never know. But our household loves this film.
