When was the FIRST time the Doctor saved the universe?

In the last five years, he saved it at least twice, from Davros' reality bomb and the End of Time Itself (tm). It's almost a cliche of Davies' era for the stakes to be set ridiculously high.

My question is, when was the FIRST time he saves the entire universe? Before it became old hat to him, when was the first time his actions made absolutely everyone, everywhere owe him a big one? My first thought was thwarting the Master from controlling the CVEs and saving everything from entropy in "Logopolis", but that can't be it, can it? Presumably getting the Key to Time for the Black Guardian would have royally messed things up for a lot of people, but it wouldn't have ended the entire universe, would it have?

For that matter, when was the FIRST time the Doctor saved Earth from total destruction? It's certainly old hat by the 70s in any case, but when was the first time that, if the Doctor hadn't saved the day, that the planet would have been immediately pulverized / vaporized / conquered right away?

Hm!

I'd say to your last part, the end of Hartnell's Doctor, wasn't Mondas coming towards Earth or the Cybermen wanted to build an engine in Earth and move it or something like that? Been a while, but I remember the Doctor saving Earth then.

Now I might be wrong, but I'm sure the OP said something about saving the universe and not just little old planet Earth.

Actually, the OP asked for both, Dimesdan.

The first story where the Doctor saves Earth from being conquered is The Dalek's Master Plan, I think. Then again in the same season in The War Machines.

Probably The Daleks Masterplan, when he prevents them using the Time Destructor to fuck things up pretty much everywhere

Possibly The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, though in that he actually arrives after they've conquered it - but he does prevent them turning it into a human-free starship.

I'm getting my serials mixed up, so the Dalek Invasion of Earth is where they wanted to destroy the core of the Earth and build an engine in the planet right? I'd say the Doctor then did save Earth from that fate. So that would be the first saving of Earth from total destruction.

Ah, I forgot about that plot development. Right, this would be the first time then, I guess. But it soon became a habit. :)

First save of the entire universe? Interesting...
Dalek Masterplan: If you reckon that the Time Destructor could have messed up the entire universe, or allowed the Daleks to conquer the entire universe.
Evil of the Daleks: If you reckon... as above, except substitute Dalek Factor for the super-weapon.
War Games: If you reckon that the War Lords ever had a chance of doing what they intended (given how easily the TIme Lords stop them once alerted, probably not).
The Time Monster: The Doctor says that unlimited use of the Chronovores power could destroy the universe, so maybe...
The Three Doctors: A definite one! The Time Lords say the energy drain will destroy the universe if left unchecked.
After that... Armageddon Factor, Logopolis, Terminus... probably some more!
