When was Star Trek the most epic?

Not really a single episode, but I found the tension and grit of the DS9 arc from "Call to Arms" through to "Sacrifice of Angels" to be probably the most epic portion of the entire franchise. I'm also weird in that I vastly prefer Star Trek VI over the second movie, and I find that to be one pretty up there, too.

The third season of Star Trek: Enterprise, apart from a few episodes, was nicely riveting for a show not named Deep Space Nine.

Best of Both Worlds.

I'd tend to agree. Or rather, it was the first really "epic" episode of Trek and it sticks out in my mind.

Various episodes of the DS9 war arc felt rather epic due to the unprecedented number of ships on-screen doing things we'd never seen Trek ships do due to budgetary and SFX constraints.

The Voyager 2-parter "Scorpion" was probably the best thing that series ever produced, and it was almost movie-like in its ambition.

For me, it was DS9's finale, "What You Leave Behind..." with the final all-out battle of the Dominion War giving way to a fiery showdown between the chosen avatars of two pretty much "Q-level" alien forces...

For me, when they reference ancient civilizations. City on the Edge, Doomsday machine, TNG's Contagion, The Chase, etc. Putting Trek not just in the context of our future, but the history of the galaxy is pretty epic.

Depends on what you mean by "epic." I'll assume lots of drama, suspense, action, and battles.
ENT: Lots of epic episodes in the Xindi arc, especially towards its conclusion. Lots of greatness in season four, including the Vulcan arc, Terra Prime, In A Mirror Darkly part 2.
TOS: The Doomsday Machine, Balance of Terror
TNG: The Best of Both Worlds 1 and 2
DS9: The whole dominion war arc, The Way of the Warrior.
VOY: Year of Hell, Scorpion

Sometimes a single moment, without the need for an elaborate, big budgeted effects, can make Trek feel epic.

It felt like the entire canvas to Trek expanded greatly with one scene between two characters (one of which we never see well) in the clip below, starting at 2:54.

I think the most epic moment in Trek is the act break in The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 where they first find the Borg ship.

A close second is the entirety of Sacrifice of Angels...

When people reference the 'Dominion War' arc, are they referring to 5x22-6x06 or the entire last two seasons? Or the entire last five seasons? I don't understand.

For me, it's close match between Yesterday's Enterprise and Best of Both Worlds.

As far style and looks, Yesterday's Enterprise has the look and feel of an epic.

I heard that they were going to go all out and make it like a mini movie - Wesley's head blows up, Data electrocuted etc. but there were too many restrictions.

BOBW has the look and the music going for it-everyone remembers the tense music as Riker orders the Enterprise to fire.

It's already been spoofed on tv so it must be considered a classic.

I would mention something from DS9, but they have so many epic like episodes, that they tend to get lost in the mix.

For the Kirk Crew: Star Trek 6
Picard Crew: Best of Both Worlds • All Good Things • First Contact
Sisko Crew: The Entire Dominion War (excluding the Ferengi and other side-episodes in between)
Janeway Crew: Scorpion • Endgame
Archer Crew: Dunno, still have to get beyond season one.

I think most people would mean the final two seasons, but your mileage may vary. Depends on if people say the "Dominion arc" or "Dominion War arc."

Thanks. And obviously, I totally meant 5x26. I'm just so used to 22-episode seasons from other things lately.

For some reason I have never been able to get too excited about TBOBW. I don't know why. *Everyone* almost always lists that among the best Trek has to offer

I don't know what's wrong with me!?

Season 3 of ENT was as epic as it gets.

Overall, I'd say:

- the Dominion War
- the Xindi arc
- The Best of Both Worlds

Yes, epic stories usually happened when Earth or the entire Quadrant was under threat from a powerful enemy.

Scorpion was VOY's most epic moment (though Year of Hell could have been that if it had been played as originally planned, as a season-long arc, with no time travel or reset button), but I can't see Endgame as epic, it was just one big Deus ex machina with dodgy time travel to get the crew back, and the Borg didn't feel threatening at that point at all. The story doesn't feel like it's really taking place on a grand scale and affecting the entire galaxy, maybe it was meant to be but it failed in that respect.
