When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would too?

I can remember the exact moment my mom told me that she read in the paper that another Star Trek movie was coming out, and this time it would feature both TNG cast and the TOS cast. Of course going off of that one blurb my mom read me from the paper I pictured an epic movie with both casts that would blow me away...but that's for another thread.

Anyways, after TNG got rolling with their films (about the time First Contact came out but long before Insurrection), did you ever stop to think that perhaps in a few years time we'd be watching a DS9 movie? Or even a Voyager flick? I thought so. I figured the movie series was very popular up to that point and I couldn't fathom the ninth film doing poorly (oops). Heck I even remember watching the first season of Voyager thinking to myself that in seven or so years I'd see these guys up on the big screen.

So in a way I am kind of disappointed those casts never got a shot, but on the other hand looking at subpar products we got with the last two TNG flicks (hey, I love Insurrection, but I'm not blind to it's flaws), I'm kind of glad this never came to be.

No I never thought the other series would get features...Deep Space Nine had just debuted at the time the TNG movie had been announced. Voyager was in development stages. Even later on I never thought we would get a movie from either of those shows. I just don't think Paramount had much faith in those casts to carry their own movies. TNG kind of seemed natural.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

My memory is a bit hazy on this, when exactly was TNG announced to make the jump to features?

I'm pretty certain it was before TNG wrapped up it's television run, yet I don't recall watching the series finale knowing they'd end up in movies. Or maybe I'm just getting old ;)

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Always had high hopes for a DS9 movie.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

The TNG movie was announced in the latter stages of season seven if I'm not mistaken. I remember reading interviews from the cast at the time who were sad about production wrapping up on the television series but excited about transitioning into feature films.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

The only thing I ever imagine happening, would be crossovers between the series, which we got in the form of cameos from the EMH, janeway, the Defiant etc.

What i would have loved to have seen though would be a next-gen movie, showing the Enterprise's involvement in the Dominion war that could easily feature the crews of both the Enterprise and DS9.

I can't see anything else working for a DS9 movie. Especially not with the crew so spread out following the finale, it'd be a contrived plot to get them back in the same place for a follow-up movie and to be honest, would we want a DS9 movie that didn't involve the Dominion? they were the main story of most of the series after all.

And as for Voyager, what could we do with them? They're home. Had they not gotten home in Endgame, then they could have done a movie where they do, but once they have, the story's over.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Yes, but then again I was very young at the time. I knew the original series had six movies so I thought the other three (ENT didn't exist at the time) should totally have six movies each as well.

When I was a bit older I thought it was fair enough that DS9 and VOY would never get movies, as they each had a definite ending (Dominion War ends; Voyager gets home) -- but I figured that ENT would probably get its own movies. Possibly movies about the Earth-Romulan War.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Not really DS9 and Voyager finished their storylines when their series ended. I can't see them making a movie that could explain who all the various DS9 charactes and what happened to them since the series ended and make a good movie as well. Voyager might've made a better movie for the average movie goer but I can't see DS9 working as a movie.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Not really. Back in 1994, I figured that TNG would continue the movie franchise for 18-20 years and would be replaced around 2015 with a 25th-Century Enterprise crew after "Star Trek: The Third Generation" completed its seven-season run...

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

No. Few outside of sci-fi/cult TV circles knows who Sisko is or who Janeway is. I'd say only two captains are in the minds of pop culture, and these are Picard and Kirk. Incidentally, these are also the most internationally known Trek actors, and have highly featured in other works apart from Trek. Brooks was in Spenser for Hire, but that largely had a US audience. The Hollywood films he has been in were supporting roles, and not necessarily blockbusters. Brooks is an excellent actor, but not in the same A-list IMO as Stewart and Shatner.

I think even though any film can sell well if promoted/marketed well, the pop culture roles that TOS and TNG had made them the most viable for Hollywood productions. It makes perfect business sense, since more people would be inclined to see films if they already have familiarity with the cast.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

I didn't really think that TNG should have made the jump-- still not sure it was the best ideal.

-- DS9 is a pretty "closed" story. And the best shot for a movie would have been during the show's run (say during the Dominion War). There's really not that many DS9 stories that would work on the big screen.

-- Voyager: Same problem. Once the ship got home, that's the story. The best chance for a Voyager movie would have been to use it as the series finale.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

I never thought for even a moment DS9 would make the big screen.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

No, I didn't think any of the spin off series would make it to film. I thought maybe they would when they first started and I was pretty young, but by the second season of Voyager and the 4th season of DS9 I realized they just weren't popular enough to be able to draw a movie crowd. That and franchise fatigue was hitting in a big way around that time, too.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

TNG was an EXTREMELY popular show as it was ending, with very high ratings, so they knew there'd be a decent audience for movies.

By the third season of DS9(which was where they were at when "Generations" came out) it was clear that it wouldn't have the ratings and popularity TNG had, so no I didn't think it would jump to movies.

But DS9 and Voyager both got actual "endings" to the show in their series' finales, whereas TNG's was clearly not wrapping things up in AGT because they didn't have to.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

I would disagree with that. DS9 and Voyager's series finales were left open ended. Perhaps not to the degree that "All Good Things..." was but you did get some sense that either one of those shows could continue. If anything "Enterprise" is the show that you really got a sense of "Okay, this is a done deal."

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

When DS9 came on, I never knew how a movie with them would work considering TNG was going into doing movies (presumably multiple) and it was unlikely they would be done with TNG movies by the time DS9 finished it's TV run. As the series continued and it became much more arc based, I highly doubted any movie would come from it. With Voyager, and it's base premise of "getting home", I never once thought that it would get a movie.

I did, however, think, at first, ENT might of had a chance of getting a film someday. However, that banked on strong ratings and making a dent in public awareness (which it never really did past, maybe, the first episode).

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

No, not at all. None of the post TNG shows were popular enough to sustain a movie run. Even less would've cared than would've cared about TNG. I always figured that a TOS remake would be the best and only way to go.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

I will admit that I thought and hoped that we would see DS9 mini-series a few years after the show ended.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Not any specific spin-off, no. I often imagined how DS9 and Voyager characters might show up though and pitch in to help a TNG crew. Maybe even the odd familar face replacing somebody on the Enterprise-E, while they got transferred to another ship in pretty much the way Star Trek VI promoted Sulu to the Excelsior and brought in Valerius.

I find it particularly sad Colm Meaney's O'Brien never appeared on the big screen. Having him come back from Earth to be a Chief Engineer and Geordi La Forge as Captain on another ship possibly.

Another possibility might've been to replace Beverly Crusher with one of the other series Doctors - Bashir or the Holographic Doc. A film-by-film transition where TNG characters were moved around, unexpectedly killed off or just chose to take an assignment back on Earth... while plausable Starfleet DS9/VOY people replaced.

I can't say I expected Enterprise to reach the big screen but I did want it to go the distance on television. The Birth of the Federation and Romulan War sagas wouldn't have worked in cinemas, in the space of a couple of hours but serialised week after week. I remain gutted that Enterprise didn't make the full 7 years, with a new headwriter finally in charge planning to go in that direction. Especially since I haven't been particularly interested in Star Trek or indeed any much sci-fi since.
