When spock was Dead

I remember when it was implyed that Spock was dead in the episode Sarek...I actually thought it was sad the way Picard played out that scene where Sarek's emotions came out...and when he says "Spock, amada, did you know how much I luuuuuuuuuuuuved you?"

Great stuff..I think Spock should have remained dead. Unification was not nearly as good as Sarek, IMO..

Er...when did they imply that? Picard and Sarek discuss a son's wedding, but I don't remember any talk of a funeral. There's even a quote in the TNG companion book about how they could never get away with killing Spock off-screen.

I never saw that as meaning Spock was dead. It always seemed like he was thinking of Spock, then moved onto Amanda, who was dead, then focused on her.

Wasn't it Roddenberry's original intention with TNG that both Kirk and Spock be dead?

yes...he did. And so when Picard uttered that line, long before Spock came back for unification, it made Sarek's words about spock (via Picard) very emotional..I remember playing it over and over because I thought it was sad and how Sarek was going to die with out every coming to terms with spock...

And I still think bringing Spock back for that two parter episode just so that he could reference the events of TUC was lackluster...Yes, Spock will be in the movie and who knows he may finally die, but for me? I liked Generations, I am dissmissive about Sarek. The only true post-TOS era episode I thought they really did a great job on was Relics. It had a good story and a great message about neglecting those who came before us..very touching, and IMO, Doohan's best SCOTTY performance...

I always felt that the implication was that, despite that brief reconciliation at the end of ST IV, Spock and Sarek continued to have issues, a point that was followed up in "Sarek", ST VI and "Unification".

The first appearance of a living Spock in the 24th century was actually non canonical: the crossover TOS/TNG comic mini-series, "The Modala Imperative" (1991). Peter David had a grey-sideburned Spock reunite with Admiral McCoy in scenes that predated the writing of TNG's "Unification".

Which had nothing to do with Spock being dead. He regretted the distance he had put between himself and his son. It was rather similar to Spock's lament over his relationship with his mother in The Naked Time.
Guess it's hard out here for a Vulcan.

Co-incidentally, I just watched that episode recently and saw no such implication.

Yeah, I'm really confused what the OP is referencing too. I recently watched TNG in its entirety and I don't think there's a single mention of Spock having died.

I think you might be wrong about that. In the book Star Trek: Where No One Has Gone Before" there was a section that addressed bringing Spock and Sarek into TNG, since Roddenberry had observed that "Vulcans age slowly."

GR wanted to put some distance between the original ST and TNG, but, later, he was open to having Spock and Sarek appear on the show.

In any case, I don't think that scene with Picard necessarily indicated that Spock was dead. Sarek had a disease which made his emotions run amok, so of course he was thinking of two people he loved: Spock and Amanda.

The only information they gave in Sarek that could possibly relate to Spock was that Picard was at the wedding of Sarek's son. We don't know if this is Spock, but GR said he thought it was. There was no mention of Spock's death. Conversely, it was obvious that Amanda had passed away.

Finally, I loved Unification. I thought it was a well-plotted episode, one of TNG's best. Very cool to see Spock working with Picard and Data and it gave Mark Lenard a last great scene with Sarek.

There was no implication that Spock was dead.

Only that Spock was mentioned in the same sentence as Amanda who was dead.
