When is shooting scheduled to start?

I thought it was November 5, but maybe it's been pushed back to a bit later in the month. I think it's a three month shoot.

Read-thrus probably starting about OCtober 22.

What is a read-thru?

Do they all sit around a table like in a conference room or something and read the script out loud?

^Yes.

So, if they're filming soon, there must be, like, sets and stuff made, right? That's what I'm interested in seeing. Sets and stuff. What the movie's actually going to look like.

Sets and stuff.

Yeah, that's paydirt for me too.

Actors and story points are nice, but what's it going to look like?

A picture is worth a thousand words and all that...

and a few pictures would give a quantum leap in the idea each one of us has of what Abrams' vision for this film is.

^Hi Tamek. :)

Yes, the film won't feel "real" to me until I've seen actual physical proof that it's being made. Part of me still suspects that it's not going to be made at all, even though several main characters have been cast!

I'll never forget the thrill that hit me when i saw the first TWOK photos in Starlog.

I knew they were making it, but when I saw the first pictures my heart-beat must have jumped by 25 beats.

Can't shoot it or do a 'read-through' without a Kirk though can they?

They can certainly do a read-through without an actor cast in the part. Open roles or bit parts are generally read by some person sitting at the table.

^Well duh, of course they can do a read-thorugh without the actors....

But the point of a read thorugh is to rehearse & get a feel for how the actors will perform the part--not how the 'script girl' will do the part.

His point was that until they have the Kirk, McCoy, Scott & 'villian' actors cast, a read through is mostly pointless.

I would guess most major motion pictures have their lead actor cast6 weeks before filming!

Read throughs are also useful to just hearing the script out loud, in order to do rewrites, it's not just about rehearsal.

I was just thinking of the Harrison Ford "you can type this shit, George, but you can't say it!" factor - if nothing else, they should read the script out loud for that! :D

"Read-thorugh"-- "organized reading of the screenplay by the actors with speaking parts..."

Does anybody think that the writers, directors, producers haven't read the script out loud and would use a read-through for that purpose?

Read-thorughs are done just before rehearsals with the actual movie cast---not 'script persons' and fill-ins.

Yes, you will need the Kirk, McCoy and 'villain' actors for a proper read though. Also because certain actors sound better saying different words or word-orders than was written in the script due to their voice or accent or preference.

^^ in the latest interview with Orci he said that the second draft of the script is ready and the only changes they still plan on making are to fit the dialog to the actors. He also said that there are no new cast members other then the four we know about. So it doesn't look like they'll be doing a read through anytime soon.

^Yes, that's the point, they seem to be full speed ahead for November shooting--without at least 4 of their top characters cast (Kirk, Scott, McCoy & 'adversary')let alone love interest etc.

I'm afraid the shooting start will slip or they'll decide on 'second choice' actors.

I'm just a little worried.

Maybe they are just lying and they know who will be playing what.

^ I'm a little worried too. But I don't think they are lying.
The way I see it there are three possibilities regarding the uncased roles:
1. They have no one lined up for the role. This is the worst case scenario.
2. They have more then one potential candidate, so they feel they can take the time until choosing one (I feel this is where the Scotty casting is).
3. They already made their choice, but the deal is still in the negotiations/lawyers phase.

Option 3 is probably the best, but it can easily turn into option one if the negotiations fall through (if Crow asks for too much money, for example).

Again I'm not. Given that making movies and tv shows are their jobs I'm sure they're aware of their deadlines and what needs to be done and when.

Just because we're not in the loop doesn't mean all sorts of discussions with agents and notions of who should fill what part isn't going on even as we speak. It only looks like nothing much is up because we as fans are outside of the bubble that is the production itself.
