When/If Trek Lit reaches 2387

I want Data back in TrekLit.

I want Janeway back.

I want Neelix back.

I want Kes back (but only if they wipe out that "Fury" crap, don't ruin the character in any other way and let the character be what she was in seasons 1-3, with a prolonged lifespan).

I want Tuvok back in the Voyager crew.

I want Sisko and Odo in the DS9 crew as well.

Data's not going to be back for some while, likewise Janeway. Neelix is doing his own thing in his adopted asteroid colony home, Kes is elsewhere, Tuvok is happy with his wife on Titan, Sisko is commanding his own Galaxy-class ship and Odo is--effectively--a temporarily exiled head of state resident on his adopted homeworld of Bajor.

Settings evolve, characters change.

I do sympathise - I'd like Data back. Despite my lack of interest, I suspect Janeway will be back soon enough. I couldn't give a rats ass about Kes.

Tuvok, Sisko and Odo are just fine where they are (assuming the Odo arc is picked up again).

Putting all these characters back where they were would lead to a very stagnant Trekverse don't you think ?

^ I doubt Maddox has anywhere near the technical skill that Soong or Data did. Maddox may be a decent enough scientist, but he's not them. If it was that easy to build a positronic brain, there'd be an army of Datas already. Soong and Data would appear to have been unique in that ability.

Well, even as far back as "Measure Of A Man," Maddox noted that he's already built the positronic brain. What was missing was the conciousness--the essense of life that crossed the line from mere AI to the likes of Data. That is what Soong in his genius could do, that Maddox could not.

With B-4--and Data--it could well simply become a matter of transferring one of them--preferrably Data--into the new body.

Isn't it straightforward to construct a positronic brain but laying down stable pathways that lead to intelligence and self-awareness is the problem?

There are certainly other possible ways such a story could be told.

Of course, although I also seem to recall KRAD and other authors being quite emphatic that Data would not be coming back in the regular Pocket novel continuity, thus leaving the "Countdown" and "Star Trek Online" continuities out on their own. Unless Ed S., or some future editor at Pocket/Gallery feels very differently, I wasn't planning on holding my breath. :bolian:

I think the attitude the authors have expressed is a distaste for the overuse of resurrection in general and the way it cheapens death. That doesn't mean there can't be occasional stories where it works. If somebody came up with a very good idea for resurrecting a certain character, a way to do it that wasn't just a wish-fulfilling copout and didn't cheapen the impact of death, then I doubt there's be much authorial/editorial antipathy for it, because it's not about whether a specific character is alive or dead but about whether the stories are good or meaningful.

Indeed don't want it to be like Marvel and DC where death never sticks to popular characters.

what no one thinks they were any good ideas in STO? They use species 8473 or whatever, I think. honestly, the only quality new opposition race brought in during the entire voyager run and so under developed unlike the Dominion in dS9

I haven't played any STO, so I can't comment to much. But what I've read about it on Memory Beta, it all sounds so incredibly fanboyish....

^^ It's an online adventure-driven game, which ultimately confines its scope for commentary on the (in)human condition or presenting characterisation in a sustained manner. Sadly it is not an emotional or philosophical odyssey along the lines of Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy or a Quantic Dream project (like Heavy Rain, or the upcoming Beyond) or any of a number of games which could join (or already are) members of the Smithsonian's Video Game as Art roll call.
