When exactly did picard become less grumpy?

I never really saw him as a grumpy character.

Perhaps irritable then, as someone mentioned it on this thread. I woudn't say he is a grumpy character -the trait isn't that strong- but imho there's definitely a change in his demeanor somewhere between S1 and, say, S4.

Was it true that Pulaski was considered for the episode Ethics, or was that just fanwankery?

You mean, Pulaski being the 'unethical expert'? I'm not sure I would have liked that. I didn't like Pulaski too much, to be sure, but she was a member of the main cast for a year and I wouldn't have liked an ex-enterprise crewmember portrayed like that, not in a show like TNG (but perhaps it could have been done in DS9).

I actually like her spunk now and how she challenges her beliefs whether it be against Data or anything else. It would've been interesting if she made an appearance outside of S2.

I agree, that would have been great if she'd made a couple of guest appearances. However, I thought I heard that Muldaur didn't enjoy her time on TNG at all, so I don't know if she would have come back, even if she had been asked.

(She's made a few memorable appearances in the novels, though! :))

I don't know, I don't recall hearing that. But I would probably agree with atQuark's... Pulaski wasn't unethical, and that probably wouldn't have been a good fit.

For all I know, I'm remembering a hypothetical discussion here on Trek BBS about Pulaski in that role, but I do remember something.

I think he started to soften after the shuttle ride with Wesley in Samaritan Snare...although you can see hints here and there as far back as When the Bough Breaks.

There's a fairly recent interview with Marina Sirtis going around - in it she talks about the women of Trek and how Diana Muldaur was kind of like... "yeah, I won't be here next year anyway." Sounds like her experience on the show as a replacement wasn't the best.

Additionally, it's interesting to me that there is barely any reference in-universe to Pulaski after season 2 ends. Even the holo Moriarty I would have expected to ask about her. I personally think TPTB wanted to never reference her again.

Edit: I stand corrected. There was a mention of her in Voyager's Endgame, can't believe I missed this.

In the alternative future timeline portrayed in "Endgame", the Star Trek: Voyager finale, Pulaski is said to have worked at the Starfleet Medical facility in San Francisco.[21]

A missed opportunity - seeing Dr. Crusher and Pulaski in a scene together would have been interesting. I do feel sorry for Diana M it must have been damn weird to be in her position. Nobody wanted to see Gates go.

How funny...I didn't realize till years later that anyone considered Picard grumpy, though he was pretty serious at first.
