When exactly did picard become less grumpy?

at Quark's

Vice Admiral
Admiral
When you look at early S1 Picard, you see a somewhat grumpy older man, not above being short-circuited and barking at his officers when he's annoyed about something. When you look at later Picard, you see a much more cordial (albeit still somewhat formal) man.

My question: when did this change take place ? I have the feeling that it was gradual, so that I can't put my finger on a precise moment, but is that impression correct ?

Also, was there a conscious decision to make him less grumpy, or was it just the way his character gradually developed (in the writing team) ?

Season 3 seems to be when most of the characters found their footing so I'd say that's when Picard developed into a more cordial character.

I'd say Picard being more warm started in somewhere in season two, especially after Patrick Stewart sent a memo in regards to Picard's development.

Where it really solidified was in the episode "Booby Trap," where Picard is genuinely excited about seeing the ancient battlecruiser and talks about building ships in bottles.

"I did not play with toys!"
"I was never a boy."

What I loved about Season 3 in a nutshell.

Interestingly, the character started to soften a little in Season 2, after Beverly Crusher leaves for Starfleet Medical. But, perhaps more crucially, he softened even more in Season 3..... after she came back. :)

Maybe that was the problem with the whole Picard/Bev angle...he shouldn't have been softening when she was around....

Wow, I think you're right. Kudos on your precision answer!

"Oh, good Lord, didn't anybody here build ships in bottles when they were boys?" :mallory:

I love the blooper from that scene (go to 57 seconds):

Picard seemed to get over some of his aversion to children in Disaster.

*crying*
Picard: Stop crying!"
*more crying*
Picard: "That always works with Comahnder Riker"

For someone who has such a strong aversion to children, he's actually pretty good with them in that episode.

Hah, I was gonna reference this.

Definitely anything after the first season made Picard less irritable or when he decided to accept Wesley more.

See? He got less grumpy after Pulaski came aboard, and he realized he couldn't compete! ;)

(And I'm saying that as one of the few people who actually *likes* the Pulaski character...)

For me, it's when he starts laughing in Up the Long Ladder. Sometimes you just have to bow to the absurd!

I actually like her spunk now and how she challenges her beliefs whether it be against Data or anything else. It would've been interesting if she made an appearance outside of S2.
