When does a lie become a fantasy you actually believe in?

Hey as long as you can ask yourself the question, you're okay. It's when you stop asking the question (ie get comfortable in your situation and don't want to change/improve it) that you have a problem.

Which is true for 99% of things in life.

Hmm, yes at least I know what I'm doing is slightly odd. I'm also quite dissappointed in myself for not making up a career more exciting than proof-reading

I think I'll just start wearing dark glasses in all weather and being mysterious :shifty:

I have lived in my small nest of flats for 15 years and know the neighbours as well as they know me.

We chat at the bins (it's sooo the new water cooler), we know when we go to work, we know who has visitors and if there is a strange car in the car park ~ and I know when the guy upstairs pees.

So when I lost my job and was home, it was noticed. So suddenly I became the 'freelance, proofreader, copy-editor, article writer' working from home.

Oh, how I have complained about wanting a proper job and not being stuck at home all the time.
And when I am caught outside with a book and a glass of beer in the middle of the day "well there's only so much staring at the screen you can take"
How I've excused getting up mid-morning by saying "I'm working for an American company and not getting assignments until noon "

I'm not just lying to them anymore ~ I'm lying to myself. The next thing you know I will be a secret agent and checking their flats for bugs.

So I kinda feel bad about leading them astray but to be honest I'm too ashamed to say I'm unemployed.
I'm not hurting anyone, it's just I keep forgetting the lies. Note to MI5 ~ would make crap spy

Anyway I excuse myself with this quote:

"There is no glory in honesty if it is destructive. And no shame in dishonesty if it's goal is to offer grace."

MJ Rose ~ Lying in Bed.

So is anyone else living a lie?
And do you think mine is excusable?

A lie becomes something you believe in when you tell it enough.
I'm living a lie.

When I was unemployed I found the "help" of my "friends" was damn smothering. I don't want to know what the temp service or labor pool has on the board at the moment... Yes I know Dayton Rodgers is hiring becuase they are trying to REPLACE ME, no I can't go back and work for $8.50 an hour at a place I blew off 10 years ago... Stop giving my name to the Military Recruiter!

So I told them I was running a small machine shop down in my basement. Went to Horrible Freight in the city and purchased a lathe setup for $750. Then I sat there and made a bunch of impressive looking but useless widgets, drew up a bunch of very elaborate CAD models and printed up a business card. Everyone backed way way off...

...and next thing I knew people were actually bringing me plans and drawings.

Now it's For Real. I have a mill, a big lathe, a press-brake and a plasma cutter among other toys down here... and I make a nice pile of wasting money doing jobs on the side. :)

No shame in being unemployed.. especially with the financial crisis around but i understand your reasons.

Some people have nothing better to do than to talk about others and neighbors are sometimes the nosiest and most talkative of the bunch. In my house we have an old lady and her husband and a running joke is that she's our intelligence service.. you want to know what happened to whom go ask her.

Just tell them you're running an online brothel and it doesn't pick up until late noon/evening ;)

Sound like one of my in-laws. Whenever things slow down as his "real" job he fires up the garage metal shop and makes money popping low volume or custom pieces at home. Doesn't do to bad (money wise) from what I hear.

Oh and I love the family/Friends that are handy with the job offers. "oh really, if it's such a good job why isn't your ass trying for it?" has become my default response.

There is a certain subset of people around here who honestly think $8.50 an hour is premium wages. Remember when they were MY age they were making $2.25 an hour!

I tell them to quit their jobs and go work for $8.50. Same people pushing on me get this horrified look on their faces and announce that they make at LEAST three times that and they have SENIORITY at their jobs. I should be GRATEFUL for the opportunity to work for pennies above minimum wage.

Whatever. They will die off soon. Once we get the Entitlement Generation in the grave where they belong we can start working on getting the trades back on track and recovering some lost ground in manufacturing.

I love that shit man. Long on "what you should do" and short of "putting money where their mouth is."

I'm living a lie.

You can't just say that and not tell us about it
We promise not to tell anyone else ;)

See why don't I just do it? I was actually doing proof-reading on-line for Project Gutenberg (basically typing in text from old books) but it was voluntary. That's where the lie started:
Nice neighbour "What are you doing now?"
Panicked K'eh "Proofreading" :)
I can do proof-reading, I can do all the things I lie about so damn it ~ thank you Plec I'm going to fire off cv's and do it for real:techman:

In some ways neighbours like that are great, but in others it is a bit scarey. Especially when I found out No. 24 was going through No. 19's rubbish to prove that there were two people living there and not one :wtf:

Just thinking about that... what fun could I have with putting bizarre stuff in my rubbish

Sorry this isn't going to be as juicy as you'd like. Ya know the song the tears of a clown right. That's how I feel sometimes.

Oh honey ~ I know the song.
If you want to dump on someone PM me ~ I'm full of crap that could cheer you up

And actually The Great Pretender is accurate as well...by the Platters.
I've been singing these songs for too long and it's time for a change. High time...and for once I don't mean that as a smoking pot reference. :)

Thank you for your kind words...I know I'll be alright come tomorrow. :techman:
But in case I'm not don't be too surprised that I took you up on that PM offer. Thank you again.

I only know the version by the Platters and the only other song I know that has a similar title is "The Pretender"...by Jackson Browne.

I just don't picture Freddie jamming to this...LOL but I could be wrong...as that's happnes at least 5-10 times per day LOL.

LOL see I told ya I'm wrong at least 5-10 times per day.

Only the good die young huh? Guess that explains why I'm still kickin' around LOL.

^ I still say Freddie was the ultimate entertainer. A brilliant, beautiful yet tortured individual.
Funny enough, looking though my vinyl collection tonight I have come across 'The Platters' Countdown series?
Track one ~ The Great Pretender
It's going on after Queen :)

I agree he was the consummate entertainer (may of spelled that wrong)...I disagree that M. Jackson was the greatest entertainer to ever live. !!!

You hear The Platters...the lead singer sings it with feeling...you believe him...you can feel his pain.

^ MJ never did anything for me either.
I always thought he was 'living a lie' :vulcan:
Whereas Freddie was totally out there and honest :)

Putting Platters on now...

Starting a side business isn't a bad idea.

Two advice-bits:

1) Don't invest more than you can afford to lose... I started by spending half a month's wages.

2) Advertise advertise advertise. Let EVERYONE I said EVERYONE know even if they don't need your service... they might know someone who does.
