When did Mondas drift away from Earth?

It really makes no sense that any planet would develop to look exactly like Earth, exact same land masses. This goes for Miri and Mondas.

^ Well for now this is probably only a science fiction created concept of a duplicate Earth within the same star system.

Excuse my lack of research as usual, but my take on Sister world was that the world shared the same orbit as the earth on the opposite side of the sun like Counter Earth from Marvel comics (which was manufactured by a mad demigod) or even the earth on the other side of the Sun form the kooky 60s scifi-drama Planet of the Giants.

Maybe it's the Cybus Earth, somehow transplanted to the NuWho timeline and chucked back in time.

^ Excellent idea. :techman: Then we wouldn't feel so cheated about watching the origins of a version of the Cybermen that we've never seen before.

You mean the royal we don't you, not we as in your and others? I know a fair few people would agree with you, but still, it's just your opinion and instead of we, it's I not talking about yourself as you're not on my currency.

It is a good idea though to be honest, I don't feel cheated though regarding the origin of the cybers in the alt universe.

Has anyone here ever read David Banks' Cybermen book? He theories on reconciling all the different types of Cybermen seen over the decades are quite interesting. For example, he says that the Cybermen in The Invasion looked so radically different from the ones in The Tenth Planet (which, although it occured earlier in the Doctor's personal timeline, was actually set over around a decade or so after the timeframe of The Invasion) because they were an offshoot race that had abandoned Mondas long ago, while their less advanced cousins remained behind.

I have to admit, I'm still unsure whether The Wheel in Space (which also features Cybermen) takes place before or after the events of The Moonbase. Banks thinks Wheel happens decades prior to Moonbase, in 2028, but now I'm not so sure.

Didn't Lance Parkin have some ideas of his own regarding the Cyberman variants? I seem to recall him talking about it to some length in his AHistory book.

^ I think it's his way of telling me he's getting me a copy for a late christmas present.

"Cybermen" is a pretty good book, but it's somewhat outdated. It's got some cool paintings and illustrations of the various Cyberincarnations though.

I can confirm Whofan's recommendation of Cybermen, but I'm biased, as I get a thanks in it. Mainly for pub debates with David :-)

On the OP question: if you're writing fan fic, do what works with your story. The lines in Tenth Planet are vague enough to allow for a lot of interpretations. Attack mentions the power plant, so that's onscreen, but really, you have a lot of options.
Mondas's departure could be in the last 20,00 years (and remembered in legend, which was David Banks's original idea), or at the time of the Moon's arrival as in the Silurians, or long before that, so that there were Silurians on Mondas whose experiments created the Cybermen (as in the DWM comics). And Mondas' journey to the 'edge of space' could be the other side of the universe, or just the edge of the solar system a light year away.

Basically, go with your idea, and don't worry too much about continuity for such a muddle (particularly non-TV continuity). You have a lot of space in which to explore new ideas (and they may be more interesting than slavish continuity).

I'm even more intrigued about the Cybermen's complicated evolution now that I've heard:

Series 6 of NuWho might be featuring redesigned Classic Series Cybermen, apparently mummified in an Egyptian tomb. This is pure rumour though.

Whats the point? Cybermen are cybermen. Isn't it?

The Cybus origin story was a bit naff but whats done is done, there is nothing to be gained by revisiting Mondas.

Well if they do a story that's better than the Cybus one then there is something to be gained. Quality storytelling (not that dr who doesn't)

I just had a horrible thought.

To be kept in an Egyptian Tomb means the possibility of a connection with the Ossirans. What if the Cybermen technology is just left over tech from the gods gone mad, if not sometimes actual Ossiran footsoldiers wake up?

Wow.

the spellcheck/dictionary on my firefox browser is suggesting that i might want to be typing "Cyberpunk" every time I type Cyberman.

Wow.

I wish they did a Doctor Who Story where the Doctor is actually the cause of creating his villians. Like he lands on Mondas at some point in history and does something that causes them to (accidentally) plant the seed of what would eventually become the cybermen.

Or you could do a story where the Doctor is one of the causes for the Kaled/ Thal war. But the Kaleds are the good guys, not the thals
