When did DS9 lose gas?

I don't think it ever really did.

I think in many ways the show got better and better. At the same time, some aspects of the show I didn't enjoy (Worf, Klingon honor) got worse.

Season 7 had Ezri (best, or at least cutest, Trek character ever). It also had the most and worst Pah Wraith stuff.

DS9 was a strange mix, beginning to end.

I'd have loved another season or two, definitely.

I think they were good with it, but some stuff they definitely mishandled.

Like Season 6's finale with Jadzia's death and the first two episodes of Season 7. All of them felt RUSHED.

That said, DS9 never dipped into suckiness the way some *cough* other Trek shows have...

I wouldn't say it lost steam, but after the occupation arc they imo did not manage to raise the bar higher and higher, which they had been doing since WOTW.
The final Prophets/PaghWraith conflict should have lasted a whole season and could have been more epic.
Also, the developments towards the end of the war seemed a bit random and rushed.

I would've liked if they had on to do 9 seasons.

DS9 with 9 seasons... Would've been cool!

I believe there was enough there for that. Having watched the final episode last night, I have to say it felt very rushed; I kept thinking about how almost every scene could have been expanded into a full story instead of the snippet we got.

I didn't think it every lost gas.

In fact, I felt season 1 was by far the weakest season, and season 2 the second weakest.

After that, it just got better and better.

This is how i always felt. I was a huge star trek fan when this came out. I rememer being underwhelmed and not watching the show for a couple years really. WHen I did come back it was awesome.

I think a lot of the problem for me is a really dislike any storys that have to do with Bajorans. I dont know why but they really irritate me.
They are all either, super spiritual, annoying, or have a chip on their shoulder.

looking back at it I think before Sisko went bald with the goatee it wasnt great but after that it was awesome

In my honest opinion, DS9 peaked with the 6-part occupation arc at the beginning of Season 6.

I think that is when DS9 really began to decline. I have never liked that particular story arc. I thought it was filled with contrived writing and questionable continuity.

I don't think it's so much that DS9 lost gas after the 6-part arc (which I agree was definitely a pinnacle) so much as it became a different show after the arc had finished.

From a viewing standpoint, there's definitely a feeling that a change in guard behind the scenes occurred toward the middle of Season 6. And from that came the much deeper, contemplative, drawn-out story line of Sisko's ascension.

I still think it worked well, but it didn't segue as much as it could have. Had there been plans for a Season 8 on the table, I have no doubt that the transition would have been more gradual. But there wasn't.

I can't say that I thought it lost gas. I thought the series became more and more interesting as it continued and, if anything, the ending was actually rushed. The Dominion War could've gone three seasons and they should've had at least a season of aftermath.

I think DS9 is the type of series that could've gone a lot longer than seven seasons and not just because of the story arcs but because with so many characters DS9 could've sustained cast/character changes better than TNG or VOY would've if they went longer.

The first season was very meh ! At first I was put off my DS9, too dark, DS9 a lot of soap, spent too much time de-constructing Roddenberry's great vision and Kira just pissed me off. I haven't watched it all but went back to look at other episodes, its later seasons were much better, the show had great actors and I understand why it has so many fans. But I think its story could have been connected better and perhaps Babylon-5 did the whole long arc story better. I never clicked with the whole Federation versus Dominion war going on for too long. I'm not sure of the history or production politics as to why Farrell left DS9, but IMHO by that stage DS9 was already running out of gas

And just how did DS9 go about deconstructing "Roddenberry's great vision"?:cardie:

It never lost gas. Sure certain elements of the show got weaker in the later seasons, but there was still plenty of good storytelling going on at the end.

Why is there this talk of 'Roddenberry's Vision' that I hear everywhere? Because I've never seen anything that lead me to believe he had some holy vision and standard for the franchise.

And I suspect that if any such stance was held, it came into being retroactively.
