When did canon become such a hot-button issue?

My rule of thumb is that if you can make an error make sense, work with it. TNG's "The Battle" has a similar error where Bok beams off the Stargazer after his monologue to Picard, even though he clearly orders the shields to activate at the beginning of it. I just figure that both the Jenolen and the Stargazer were old ships with antiquated shields, or Bok could have simply controlled the shields in some other way.

In our day and age, not everyone particularly wishes to "evolve" (at least, they don't wish to evolve according to someone else's definition of the term).
TOS seemed to rebel against the "evolved human" in their thoughts on the Shore Leave planet:
Kirk: fighting Finnegan; beautiful past love
McCoy: Alice in Wonderland; Medieval knights protecting women.
Sulu: guns; samurai
Barrows: Don Juan sexual assault; princess dresses;
Rodriguez: birds; tigers; strafing Zeros.
