Whats your Thanksgiving Like?

Usually, me, my mom, and my dad drive over to my cousins' house. One of my cousins is a like a top-notch chef (I mean he works at a high-end restaurant), so he cooks thanksgiving dinner for us, and other friends.

Unfortunately, we can't stay long, due to our puppies at home, so we drive back the next day.

We had our dinner last night, since my brother works on Thanksgiving day. I fixed turkey (it was quite succulent; I kick ass at turkey), potato salad, stuffing, and banana pudding, with my mom helping as much as she could. They brought over sweet potato souffle, and their own stuffing, and it was good, too. Then we watched National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which is how we start off the holiday season.

The babies (my 4 and 8 year old nephew and niece, respectively) ate until they were full, and sleepy, which is adorable, and we the adults all sat around and talked for a while before my brother and his family had to leave. So it was a pleasant evening for all.

Nonexistent - I'm in the UK. :p

However, they have started doing Black Friday sales over here... (indeed in some stores they started last night, i.e. Thursday).
I have a friend in the UK that smoked a turkey for Thanksgiving. He's English, but he likes any excuse to cook out. I think he even celebrates 4th of July.

My family's Thanksgiving is a smoky house with alcohol and football and loud conversation and lately, finger food in lieu of the traditional spread, and is over in 3 or 4 hours.

My wife's family Thanksgiving is turkey and dressing and pies and a lot of eating and sitting around and blank stares, and pretty much goes on for 2 or 3 days.

Guess which one I get to enjoy this year? :/

All sounds very nice, hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and injury free Black Friday

I had to go out on Black Friday to buy a dress for my 10 year high school reunion which was later that night. I am a late-December shopper so I normally never go out on Black Friday. People did make me angry and there was just TOO MANY OF THEM, however I did get 50% off my dress so it might have been worth it.

I haven't had reasons to actually shop on Black Friday because all I ever buy for people are gift cards. But if I did have to actually buy "things", there's no way in hell I'd ever go out at a time like that.

And I'm glad I work at a supermarket (a non-Walmart one), because we don't have Black Friday.

I worked at A&P Supermarket a long long time ago for about 3 years and it wasn't crazy on Black Friday of course, but I still had stupid hours like Thanksgiving until 2pm etc. Also the holidays are INSANE (TG and Christmas) because they are cooking holidays. Even when I worked just in the bakery, Christmas time was crazy. It was fun though. I loved decorating the cookies for the cookie platters for Christmas.

I love Thanksgiving. For us, it's a very intimate holiday, now that it's just the four of us. The kids and I bake on Wednesday - pies and cookies and cornbread. On Thursday, we cook for dinner - turkey, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli casserole, glazed carrots, corn with basil, hot rolls, and a relish plate loaded with goodies. When dinner is ready, usually around 1 pm, we take the time to share what we are thankful for this year. Yeah, schmaltzy, but it's good to remember. Then we eat.

And I don't cook again until Monday evening. :D

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING says "Holidays" like two grownups kicking the everloving shit out of each other over the last Black Friday "Must-Have" item.

Ah, it warms my heart just to think of it, and now our Former Owners in the Empire will get to experience the Excruciating Holiday Joy! :guffaw:

"You are welcome!"

Love,

Your Former Colonists

We don't have Black Friday here, we have Boxing Day sales. Which are totally over rated and not worth the effort of getting off the couch.

My friend in the UK said they had Black Friday this year. I didn't understand at first since Thanksgiving isn't celebrated, so why have Black Friday? I think Friday shopping in the US on the day after TG is due to the fact that most people (not in retail) have off from work. But in the UK, you don't have off from work, right? I was just a bit confused.

Anywho, apparently none of my UK pals went out this past Black Friday.

We had Thanksgiving at the Parents' house, with my aunt, uncle, and brother all coming. It was kind of a quiet get together, enjoying the company, having Turkey, a sweet potato/Marshmellow Mix that was really good, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Cranberry, Salad, and a Bean casserole. After we finished cleaning up we relaxed and watched the 49ers game (They were awful) and called it a night. Kind of a relaxing Thanksgiving, other than the work to get ready for it.

Hmm...one-hits or gently herbed and finely rolled???...fall asleep in the couch, indeed!

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Independence Day, Labor Day, and any other national holiday is just like any other day of the week for me anymore, except sometimes restaurants are closed and you can't get anything to eat.

I usually love Thanksgiving but this year really sucked. My sister is a bartender and couldn't get the holiday off this year so she got my parents and me a motel room for a few days. She lives in a college town and forgot that a big football game was going on and didn't even try to book the motel until the last minute. Since my parents have a cat we had to find a pet friendly hotel which wasn't easy and and we had to change hotels again on the last night which was really fun.

The real fun started after I got home. I ate lunch at a fast food place off the interstate and got a pretty bad case of food poisoning. I'm just now starting to feel human again but I'm still pretty weak. Hopefully next year will be better.

Because my mom's family is either dead or moved afar off, we always meet at my grandparents' home with whichever aunts, uncles, and respective offspring aren't having their own gatherings. Then we just sit, eat, and watch football. This year was a little different, being the first Thanksgiving without my grandfather; we met at my aunt's house, just down the road. I spent the day admiring my uncle's pigs, chickens, rabbits, and winter garden while checking his chipmunk traps.
