The original is still the best but I think the first sequel was better than a lot of people think. Even the third one had some god stuff but the fourth and fifth are just terrible

Apparently six is in the works

In many ways, die hard with a vengeance is the Rocky IV of Die Hard films

I think each of the Die Hards is of lower quality than the previous.

I didn't see the fifth one but the fourth was downright embarrassing.

The original is still the best by some distance. Die Hard with a Vengence is very good, aside from the slightly limp ending, and Die Harder is better than people think, I think the problem is that its just a bit too knowing and self referential.

The fourth one I think is actually ok, at least until the last half hour or so, but the fifth is just terrible, not even so bad it's good, it's just dull, Jai whatver his name is is terrible as mini McClane (in contrast to Winstead who makes for an awesome Lucy) the worst thing about it is that it doesn't even feel like a Die Hard film, it's just a bland action film where both the heroes happen to be called John McClane.

I can appreciate they wanted to scale things back a bit (terrorists take over an office building, terrorists take over an airport, terrorists take over a city, terrorists take over America, what next the world?) but you don't have to lose the essence of what makes the series great, Mcclane's always been a fish out of water, so sticking him in Moscow should have been great, he doesn't know the language, he doesn't know where he is, but aside from 30 seconds in the back of a cab he might as well have been in Chicago.

I also think it's worth noting that the better films have had a much wider cast, great characters like Al, Holly, Dwayne T Robinson, the airport cop, Dick Thornburg, Agent Johnson, Special Agent Johnson, Ellis...hell his fellow cops in Vengence feel so real you can almost imagine a TV show that just follows them.

I'd like to hope they could pull a Rocky Balboa with the sixth one (and if it isn't called 'Old Habits Die Hard' someone wants shooting) but I fear it'll be shit.

The original is best, of course. None of the other villains ever matched the on-screen presence of Alan Rickman. Die Hard 2 is definitely underrated, though. I don't really even count the others. In fact, I've come to consider "Speed" to be the real "Die Hard 3." I think the series could have continued on with other heroes besides John McClane (blasphemy, I know).

I think Willis is trying to get the actress who played his wife and the actor who played the fat cop to come back for the next one. He wants a stronger connection to the original

Am I the only one who thinks a building under siege could work again. Seriously, they could use the original concept as a framework but just inject it with some new ideas (couldn't possibly be any worse than all the other stuff they've tried)

Die Hard with a Vengeance
Die Hard
Live free or Die Hard
Die Hard 2

*Not seen 5* and don't really want to TBH.

Die Hard 3 doesn't have a better story than the original but I do like the interaction between McClane and Zeus + I did like Simon as much as his brother. Die Hard 4 was really good though the plane bit does ruin it somewhat.

Die Hard 2.

Die Hard was awesome, but we're talking McClane in the snow fighting an army and landing planes by himself. Nothing beats that shit!

Probably a better poll would be for your second favourite DH film as the first is inevitably going to be most people's answer to this question. Including my own.

I think WAV is the best sequel, partly due to the fact that it doesn't rehash the first one, which the admittedly enjoyable 2nd movie does. You also have the Willis-Jackson chemistry, a smart script, a great ensemble cast (I'd echo Starker's comments on that front) and, above all John McTiernan's direction. If only he'd made the next 2.

4 is ok but Willis stopped acting like McClane in it and they really toned down the language and violence. The plot is quite good but the direction is lacklustre. I remember watching the scene where McClane gets on top of the car and looks up and down Washington's chaos and I was thinking 'McTiernan would've done this so much better.' As for the bandwagon-jumping parkour scenes...yawn.

A Good Day is just a mess, not aided by the charisma-free Courtney and the forgettable baddies. My countryman John Moore couldn't direct traffic.

I liked DH3 the best, mainly because of the setting. I like the idea of McClane being sent on a wild goose chase throughout an entire city. Especially if it's New York. :techman:

Plus, McClane had a better rapport with Zeus Carver than with any other character in the franchise, IMHO. They were more alike than they would ever admit...

"Are you AIMING for these people?!?"
"No...well, maybe that mime."

The fourth one was so bad that it's kept me from watching Justified.

The third one was okay. SLJ was fun. And, as poorly conceived as the bag guy was, it was still effing Jeremy Irons.

The second one was cookie-cutter 80s action. But still worked, even if it was utterly ridiculous in parts.

And the fifth one was Crystal Skull all over again.

I agree that the fifth one was awful, but the fourth one was my favorite sequel. I just wished they had an explanation for the chick who just wouldn't die. Like she was cybernetic or something...

The first three are all great for different reasons. First one is a classic... love the airport setting of the second... third has great NYC filming and a great villain and plot.

The fourth one is actually pretty decent. The fifth one unfortunately is completely average.

They need to make a sixth one so that there can be two trilogies. The good trilogy (With hair) and the shitty trilogy. (Without hair)

There has been some talk of a 6th film. I heard that it might be set in Japan - McClane is invited over for the 30th anniversary of the Nakatomi siege or some such like.

Bruce celebrated his 60th yesterday. He's now old enough to play Joe Leland, the character from the original novel, Nothing Lasts Forever, on which the first movie was based.
