What's your favorite "Shatnerverse" novel?

My favorite is The Ashes of Eden or as I like to think of it: Star Trek VII: The Ashes of Eden. What a wonderful end this would have been to Kirk's adventures. It was certainly a more respectful and exciting end to this character than Generations provided. I also love the comic book adaptation. Just seeing this story visualized makes the pulse pound at what could have been if Paramount had agreed to produce this flick.

This was the first one I listened to Shatner "read" the story with music and sound effects. Closest thing to an original series movie I've had in many moons. Terrific story.

"The Ashes of Eden" - it's the only one I'll still reread. I like "The Return" at the time, but I was also twelve years old. I tried rereading it last year, and I just don't think it holds up.

Yeah. I read the graphic novel and heard Shatner's audio adaptation long before I ever read the prose novel. Exciting stuff! I heartily recommend you try the graphic novel if you can find it. It's just gorgeous! :)

The Ashes of Eden for me as well, and I wholeheartedly agree about its cinematic appeal. As for the whole "Super Kirk" thing, I've never really minded it. There are plenty of "straight" TOS stories; I think a little over-the-top melodrama was a reasonable change of pace (and not really much different from the way Picard was in the movies).

Never read all of them...stopped at Avenger, but I remember Spectre being my favourite. Can't remember much about it, though...haha

wasn't Avenger the one *before* Spectre?

Yep, you're right. My bad. I was thinking Dark Victory, not Avenger.

Can't say that I blame you for stopping when you did (considering the quality of the later novel IMO), but didn't you want to finish the trilogy at least?

Not really, no. Haha. From what I can recall (and I may be getting the details wrong here regarding the events in the books), I found Emperor Tiberius' arrival at the end of Spectre, and the MU wrap up,to be pretty cool. Then when I started in on Dark Victory, I must've found it pretty crappy since I didn't finish.

After that I never kept up with the Shatnerverse. I don't even know what's happened since...

It didn't *improve*, at least IMO .

Really, the last trilogy (Totality) was horrid..

Now that I think of it, Ashes of Eden is the only one I've actually read. The rest I've just listened to the audiobooks.

I really enjoyed Preservers as a guilty pleasure; it's just so over the top. Besides, the Reeves-Stevens' books are always great. Good choice for Bill's "ghost" writers.

I loved the depiction of the Borg in The Return. The Hypercube, the non-humanoid worker drones, the Doom3-style gore/tech collision. I like to think the ancient building with the engraved doors on the Borg homeworld at the end is a remnant of the crashed Caeliar city that begat the Borg in Destiny.

My favorite is probably Spectre. I love that whole trilogy, actually. Dark Victory and Preservers could barely handle any more ridiculousness, but they're hilariously fun to read. The style is so epic, with things like Kirk using the universe-transporter in the asteroid and ending up in the other universe where there IS NO ASTEROID just taking you for a ride. "James T. Kirk was completely and utterly alone" or whatever it was...then he sees a shadow and fights Tiberius in SPACE. Unbelievable.

That seriously happens in the book? That almost seems to be getting into so bad it's good territory to me.

The more I read about these books, the more I realize that even if I think they're terrible I will highly enjoy reading them. On the list! :)
