What's your absolute favourite videogame ever?

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals.

I miss the days of SNES. When graphics were not advanced, so you had to make decent gameplay, characters, and stories. Now everything is literally done by the book... there's little experimentation.

KoTOR was my first impulse when I first saw this thread title, but reading through this thread has reminded me of some great games.

Ironically I'm currently torn between two games that haven't been mentioned yet. On the one hand we have FreeSpace 2, the last great space-sim before the quest for non-linear gameplay (and a host of other factors) ruined the genre forever. And on the other is No One Lives Forever, an fps that sets it's tone somewhere between a genuine nostalgia for the 60s Bond films and the out and out parody of Austin Powers movies. The Cold War was never more fun.

I was always more of a fan of KOTOR II, with its darker storyline and interesting philosophy. Kreia really started to get into your head, after a while. "What if every good action is balanced by the Force with an act of evil, and you have done the inverse of what you intended to this world by giving them what they want?" That's... actually very plausiable. People get jealous, jealous people can do evil things. On the flip side, constantly berating people and stealing from them will really only make them want to be better and holier than you, not stoop to your level (in most cases).

After that I always played Gray Jedi. I also love the supporting cast, and the fact all the love stories are unrequited. It's a dark and sometimes depressing game, there shouldn't be a happy ending tacked on.

Too bad we'll never get our real ending with KOTOR III, instead we get a big ole slap in the face with a MMORPG set 300 years later. (Sigh).

Grand Theft Auto: Anything, with honorable mentions to SimCity (original), Ghostbusters (2009), Wing Commander, early Sierra adventure games pre-icon system, Below the Root (google that one), Star Wars: Battlefront II, Star Trek: Bridge Commander, Diablo II, Warcraft II, Pressure Cooker (for the Atari) and Vigilante 8.

So hard choosing just one...

I really enjoyed KoTOR 2 as well and I liked the more nuanced party interaction Obsidian brought to the game, but the game is unfinished and it shows. If Obsidian had had the time to make the game they wanted to it could have been a real gem.

I can't pick one, so I'll pick five, in no particular order. I could play any of these games for hours and hours.

1) Oblivion
2) Civilization IV
3) Perfect Dark
4) Europa Universalis III (With all the add-ons and the Whole World mod)
5) Super Mario RPG

I'm a long time western rpg player. My favorite series is probably the Ultima series, but it's hard to pick a favorite.

Ultima 7 is just amazing how it does what Oblivion did and does it better already in 1992. Having actual writers on the team probably helped.

But I also love what Warren Spector did with Ultima in Martian Dreams. It's a steampunk game taking place on Mars in 19th century, having a cast of most well known historical figures of that time. Very unique. They used to do unique more often back then.

Then we come to late 90's/early 00's. Planescape Torment. Troika games - Arcanum, Bloodlines. Ion Storm's interpretation of japanese rpgs - Anachronox. Baldur's Gate II.

In short, I have a taste for quirky and weird. I also have a thing for some adventure games like Gabriel Knight and Grim Fandango.

Some other games I think should be mentioned. Legacy of Kain series for it's storytelling alone. Dreamfall/Longest Journey. Personally I prefered Dreamfall, because of the protagonist.

Agreed. I also liked what Kotor II did. I wasn't that impressed with Kotor I, probably because I was with Bioware from the beginning and gone through all that Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights era. So when I finally got to Kotor I, I found that I had already played that game.

But most people who played Kotor I, hadn't played any previous Bioware games, so to them it was obviously fresh and new and the best thing ever.

In fact it's a problem we Bioware veterans have with modern Bioware, we keep having that "but you already gave us this ten years ago" experience lately. Only with Mass Effect II did Bioware do something completely different from their usual formula.

There was a Kotor III in development. It was done by the in-house team of Lucasarts. The guy who wrote Force Unleashed was the lead on that game. They cancelled that and did Force Unleashed instead. I'm not so sure if that would have turned out well.

I have to add Final Fantasy 6 to my list after finally getting around to playing it (it didn't come out over here on SNES so I never played it back then and I was too immature to look past the old-school graphics when the laggy PSX port came out).

I hate FPS's, but there are a few Adventure games I loved over the years.

1. Riven
2. Zork Nemsis
3. Grim Fandango
4. JourneyMan Project
5. Longest Journey

Sadly, the days of great adventure games have come and gone...

I remember well the old days of text only adventures. I spent a good portion of my life smoking weed and creating maps for those games back then.

My favorites of all time would be, in no order:

Imperialism - original version
Age of Empires - all versions
Civilization - all versions
Empire Earth - original version
Text only Adventure games
Ascendancy

My favorite game would have to be Star Trek: Bridge Commander. I've wasted more hours playing that than any other game ever thanks to all of the awesome mods for it over the years. I still play it today eight years since it came out.

That game was a lot of fun. It reminded me of those days of my youth playing Star Fleet Battles. I just missed my Andromedan Intruder.

I made the point over at Trek Gaming that Bridge Commander has got to be one of my worst experiences in modding in any game I have come across. I've never come across a large, stable mod pack that isn't unstable/broken in some way and will cause a crash randomly. Worse still, they all seem to break single player which I think is far more endearing that the blow 'em style in Quick Battle. Any smaller mod pack, then you usually find balance differences between the modders especially when it comes to the ships. One person's Akira might have more firepower than another's Sovereign for example.
I just don't think the Bridge Commander engine is desinged to accomodate all the transformations the mods bring, no matter how genius they might be. I might try the occasional retexture mod for shields, starfields and ships etc. but that would be my limit.
It might seem boring, but I prefer Bridge Commander untouched, but even then I don't exactly rate the game highly.
