What's with the Klingons?

Check out the Klingon close-ups. What do you think? A little too ape looking for my taste, but interesting none the less.

Don't know, can't see a lot. But it looks like this one has bright skin. And I'm really afraid that they actually did redesign the Klingons beyond recognition under those helmets.

The make-up is incomplete though. The actor's forehead wasn't addressed because it was covered by the helmet he wore in the deleted Rura Penthe scene. If his full face had been exposed he'd likely have had the forehead ridges (as detailed on the helmet itself).

Looks like their pulling more with the TOS ques as well as throwing in a little Samoan culture. Which would make sense, they are pretty hardcore when it comes to blood-thirsty warriors. I especially LOVE the contacts.

For some reason, the Klingon on the pic reminds me of a goat. Not just because of the goatee, but because of the nose bridge and the forehead...

These Klingons were obviously some of those unaffected by the Levodian flu mutation and ridge deformities seen on ENTERPRISE eighty years earlier. Proof that nowhere close to all Klingons lost their ridges between Archer's time and the TOS movie era.

I have nothing to say on these Klingons really since I have no idea how close to full make-up that shot is or how different they would handle the make-up if they were going to show him without a helmet.

Very interesting stuff. The variety of background aliens was rather interesting, I thought - a clean break from the Michael Westmore approach we've essentially associated Trek aliens with for decades.

These Klingons were obviously some of those unaffected by the Levodian flu mutation

The helmet idea seems designed to leave it fairly ambiguous as to whether or not these Klingons have ridges, frankly.

Look closer. The forehead and hairline haven't been made-up at all. All the photo proves is those areas didn't need to be done because the actor wore a helmet.

Agreed. That make up was only meant to be seen through the eye holes of the helmet, maybe the did have ridges, who knows.
Lets hope that along with the orthos on the Blu-Ray, they'll also have some as-of-yet unseen concept art of ships, locations, aliens, props, everything.

Fair enough. Maybe this was another J.J./Kurtzman/Orci nod to the continuity of ENTERPRISE and the previous century. Dont show ridges to make the hardcore fan wonder.

Here's a quote showing that they didn't do a full make up\prosthetics Klingon

One of the alien races that didn’t make the film’s final cut was Harlow’s briefly-seen Klingons who ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor.

“It’s actually a tease,” he points out, “because they’re wearing helmets throughout the entire prison planet scene, so you don’t really see their full faces.
All you really see are the areas around their eyes and mouths, so I sculpted and cast a piece that was basically like a Lone Ranger piece that fit around their eyes.

We punched hair into that, which gave the effect of being a Klingon without having to design the whole thing.
“What was neat was the helmets were designed with that very familiar Klingon forehead ingrained in them, and then you would see the skin area around the eyes, which would sell the fact that they were Klingons.”

Granted, we don't know what the full face was going to look like, but like you Mach5, this picture here reminds me of a goat. Blech.

I guess some Klingons as a result of genetic variation and drift would end up looking more "neanderthal" or "apeish" than others. A whole race can't look more or less the same without a few throwbacks and mutations.
