What's up with the Ferengi? Are they part of the Emerald Chain or not?

Really wondering, because we haven't seen them so far and as the capitalists they are (or were?), it would make sense to show them as part of the chain or concurrents.

Or are they still Federation members?

From Quark's rantings, it sounds as if the Ferengi always tried to lurk in the shadows and avoid direct confrontation. With the Feds taking over the galaxy, the Ferengi way of life probably would cease. That wouldn't kill them, though...

The UFP would then shrivel and shrink. But the Ferengi used to live right next door to Earth, even if possibly hiding behind some of Earth's nasty neighbors back in the 23rd century. The Chain wouldn't exactly be running them over then. So they might be around... But possibly still recovering, and keeping low profile till they figure out how to swindle the Orions without losing their lobes.

The Ferengi were never stated to have joined the Federation (canonically speaking).
The map we initially saw when Disco was as FHQ could have simply been indicating locations of various species across the galaxy and their respective status... not necessarily that those were Federation member species.

I'd surmise they are elsewhere in the background... too far out to reliably maintain contact (unless they are part of of the much smaller and enduring Federation).

There was a map in one episode that seemed to show Ferengi territory being outside of the Emerald Chain space.

This is another reason I think they simply need more episodes in the season. It would give them more of a chance to not only develop characters but to explore the universe.

give us a chance to find out the state of the Ferengi, the Klingons, the Borg, the Dominion, Cardassians, etc...

If it isn't relevant to the story no need to explore them. We got name drop of Dominion, Cardassian and Borg. I think that is sufficient.

Besides, would 4-5 extra episodes really hurt.
Maybe.

Disagree. Universe building is good and even filler episodes serve a purpose.
As long as it serves the story. The Klingons are apparently not a part of this story, thus far. Would it be nice to see them? Sure. But, at this point in time Discovery gets shellacked for too much fan service and small universe syndrome. Having all the known species popping up smacks of the same problem to me.

Mileage, etc.

I don’t really get a small universe vibe in the traditional sense from Discovery outside of Michaels connection to Spock and the involvement of the Discoprise.

if anything I think Discovery’s small universe is that it’s seemingly so self contained. There is no bigger picture of the “world” outside. We get crumbs here and there but nothing really substantial.

The small universe nature came from Michael and Spock, but also with the Klingons too. Going in to the 32nd century i don't want more than crumbs. It's like expecting TNG to tell us where all the TOS aliens were at. We didn't get that at all.

I prefer the crumb method largely because substantial will become info dumps and bog down episodes.

Again, mileage will vary.

Wait, what got name-dropped?
The Jem'Hadar and the Founders have been listed on various computer displays at Starfleet Command, a Cardassian was seen among the Emerald Chain group chasing Michael and Book in the premiere, and another Cardassian Starfleet officer was spotted at Starfleet Command. Not sure about the Borg being name dropped, and Memory Alpha didn't turn anything up either.

The Dominion weren't name dropped. There was a map that showed the Founder's Homeworld, that's it. It wasn't even the focus of the scene just background detail unimportant to anything else.
