what's the next Lost?

The LA Times reccomends shows for bereaved Losties.

Eh, darnit, I already knew about everything on this list and have watched most of it. I was hoping against hope I missed something.

I did like this description of how Lost is like Dexter:

You know that feeling you'd get as "Lost" plunged pell-mell toward a finale where it was going to pull together a bunch of story threads that didn't seem to fit together? "Dexter" is the only other show on the dial that can pull off that feeling of simultaneously being under perfect control and flying off the tracks.
Caprica is also very Lost-like in being smart sci fi; creating a whole new alternative world (notably different from BSG); and being slow-paced and complex. Caprica suffers from not having as large a number of highly watchable characters to suit all tastes.

But Chuck? Nah. A good show, but nothing like Lost. Ditto for Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad. They're really reaching.

The show that thinks it's the next Lost, but almost certainly won't be: The Event. Could be lots of fun, but my expectations aren't high enough to think it could be that good.

Here's the show I think stands the best chance of being our Lost replacement, that the writer of the article missed: Terra Nova, debuting midseason 2010-11: A big, sweeping sci-fi saga involving mysteries, conspiracies and time travel, set in the jungle. And this time, it does have dinosaurs!

Terra Nova follows an ordinary family embarking on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a massive experiment to save the human race. In the year 2149 the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped, overcrowded and overpolluted. With the majority of plant and animal life extinct, devotion to science has brought mankind to the brink of destruction, but has also provided its only hope for salvation.

Knowing there is no way to reverse the damage to the planet, a coalition of scientists has managed to open up a fracture in the space-time continuum, creating a portal to prehistoric Earth. This doorway leads to an amazing world, one that allows for a last-ditch effort to save the human race...possibly changing the future by correcting the mistakes of the past.
...

In addition to blue skies, rolling rivers and lush vegetation, Terra Nova offers new opportunities and fresh beginnings to its recent arrivals, but the Shannons have brought with them a familial secret that may threaten their citizenship in this utopia. Additionally these adventurers soon discover that this healthy, vibrant world is not as idyllic as it initially appears.

The areas surrounding Terra Nova are filled with dangerous dinosaurs, and other prehistoric threats, as well as external forces that may be intent on destroying this new world before it begins. But perhaps even more threatening than what lies outside the protective walls is the Shannons' realization that something sinister may be happening inside Terra Nova as not everyone on this mission has the same intentions of how best to save mankind.
For the inevitable quibblers, I'm not guaranteeing that Terra Nova will be the next Lost, only that among all the candidates (haw), it stands the best chance.

Or, catch Jacob and Samuel's mommy on Mr. Sunshine. With any luck, she'll stab Chandler in the gut while telling him it's for everyone's good. :p

We'll see how those shows turn out, but Terra Nova does sound somewhat intriguing, that's the Steven Speilerg one right? Or at least has his name attached. Then again time travel right off the bat? Oh man.

Even though True Blood is based off a novel, it kind of has a set structure that's still in progress, the show however has kind of taken its own spin on things but still adheres to the themes of the novel. It also has interesting characters too. I think or at least I hope, it will have a great story arc in the end to being called as "the next Lost" similar to Dexter and the other shows you listed. The cool thing about Dexter though is that even it has an arc, it does sometimes feel kind of episodic with the victim of the week aspect and even procedural him being a blood splatter specialist and all. Still a great show.

What's the next Lost?

The should do a show about a group of U.S. soldiers returning from duty in Afghanistan or Iraq. After coming home, they start to notice that their family and friends act in an odd manner. Trying to find out what's going they're stumbling across a conspiracy, and come to the conclusion that their loves ones were somehow brainwashed or replaced by imposters for some reason. In the mid-season finale it's revealed that it's not the relatives who were changed (they're fine), but the soldiers themselves!

After they figure that out, the U.S. military is suddenly after them and tries to kill them (and succeed with at least one of the main cast members). Since they have no place else to go, they return to Afghanistan/Iraq in an attempt to find out what happened to them (or their "originals").

I admit, the basic premise is stolen from the DS9 episode "Whispers". But there's enough meat in it to turn in into a full-blown series, I think. Of course, the final reveal should be different one. I doubt that the Taliban have cloning technology. :)

If it runs the distance - and that's a big if - Game of Thrones could be the next Lost in some ways: heavily serialized, a large cast of engaging characters, huge plot twists, shocking deaths, conspiratorial plots and strategies.

I don't see there being another Lost for me. I'm not searching for another Lost. It was almost afluke I started watching Lost in the first place. I haven't been this obsessed with a show since I was a kid watching Star Trek. I don't see myself getting into another show like that any time soon, because I'm not actively looking into getting into another show.

Yep, Speilberg. And Brannon Braga! Yikes! Expect Dino Nazis. :rommie:

I've got it. Hear me out. A Lost sequel starring the Most Interesting Man in the World and The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.

Okay, the MYMCSL saves the fox by throwing the pearls onto the path and tripping the horses. But how does the smoke monster play into all this?

The Smoke monster is the Fox. (Obviously ;) )

It's all an over elaborate plan that Smokie has to use two television commercial stars to get him off the Island and away from his pursuers. It will eventually involve unnecessary time travel, the help of the people who are actually chasing him, and a bunch of people making random choices and often acting against thier own best interests or plans, for him to escape. SUre, it's a complicated plan that could fail a dozen times over through no fault of smokies own since so much of the plan depends on his enemies actually helping him, but it is a plan...

The Event wants to be the next Lost, but I don't think it'll happen.

With the season-ending development in Fringe, if season three is fully committed to its core mythology (instead of spending half the episodes doing stand-alone plots), it could take the show to a whole new level.

The Event seems like it came from the same ilk that Flashforward, Surface, The Nine, Invasion, came from. Wonder how The Cape will fair.

Very true about Fringe. I actually kind of like how Fringe meshes it's "strange phenomenon of the week" episodes within the main core theme, or at least tries to. But I guess you can just chalk it up to the Fringe science by Walter and William. Supernatural at times does that as well. The strange things they encounter can just be chalked up to the evil that's out on the loose. Each episode is usually still tied to the mythology in some form or another.

My gut feeling at this point is that The Event will be a first season cancellation, No Ordinary Family and Terra Nova will get second season renewals, and The Cape could go either way.

Agreed. Season 2 was a huge leap forward over Season 1. As the show became more serial the writing really started to come on strong as well. If season 3 hits the gates running and captures some more viewers, we could have a really nice show for the next 3-4 years.

I love LOST but I find Dexter terribly boring - just not my cup of tea.

Looking forward to Terra Nova though :techman:
