What's the last good song you discovered?

I personally liked the song "The Flame" by Cheap Trick. I still can't get that song outta my head! :D And anything by Within Temptation, such as "What Have You Done?" and "Pale".

"Ophelia" by Natalie Merchant. Although she is somewhat like Eddie Vedder - great voice, can't understand 1/2 of what she's singing.

I just saw Dead Meadow last night so here's a few songs that I somewhat recently discovered. Damn, their concerts are like an aphrodisiac. I can see why one reviewer called their music great "make out" music. Makes me want to grab a cute guy and say," Come home with me." :p :alienblush:

At Her Open Door

From the heights of the town
her handmaids will announce
her undying presence within
her seven-pillared house
Gifts of gold lie undisturbed
at her open door
Give until nothing's left then
wish to give more
Her words ring out all too clearly
in your ears
Until all else disappears
in a never ending night
she shines like boundless light
Though she calls quietly
know she'll take it all

Ok, can you tell I really love this band.

P.S. I saw somebody named Stone Roses-- ahh...one of my favorite all time bands.

The new new Muse single, 'Uprising'. To me it sounds like the bass line form Goldfrapp's 'Oo La La' with theremin noodling similar to the Dr Who theme over the top. I like it.

Don't judge, but I was very taken with Taylor Swift's "Fifteen." Those lyrics are killer: wistful and wise and just sums up adolescence. From the last verse:

"Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind. We both cried."

I know she's kind of overhyped and such, but I love that young lady's songs and this one especially.

^ I don't judge. :D

I have discovered two songs on Rob Thomas' new CD, Cradlesong. (I know, I know) Yes, it's typical pop, but something about Rob Thomas' voice and his lyrics that makes me actually LIKE his music.

The songs "Snowblind" and "Wonderful" are fantastic. I can't get them out of my head. I also like "Someday," even if it is a bit more pedestrian.

It is a good song, better than Eurasia certainly but they're still not hitting their stride. Love the sheer Doctor Who-ness of it though.

What IS it about that man? I love him. Now I have to go look up that album and try it out.

I was going to mention the Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling," but it breaks the rules. Still, it makes me very happy. I love the little phrases shoved in between lines - "Mazel Tov! (L'Chaim!) Look at her dancin'! (Move it! Move it!)" Just makes me giggle with joy every time. And the beat is so energizing.

*awaits wrist slapping for breaking the rules* ;)

Another song I just came across- very lovely and peaceful. And so relaxing. I love the reverb and the melody and vocals are enchanting. And it's got that little bit of trippiness that makes it acceptable to me. :p
People who like/liked country or folk might go for this. She describes her music as ‘Psychedelic Chamber Folk Rock.’

It's not a new discovery for me as such, but the song with which I've lately become obsessed is "Radio, Radio" by Elvis Costello. I've been teaching myself to play it, so I'm constantly singing it in my head and running through the chords or listening to it on my MP3 player and sort of air-guitaring along.

I do that all the time with songs I'm learning to play.

Found some new stuff, so time to resurrect this one.

An earlier poster had mentioned Within Temptation. Found a few other groups in the same vein.

Sirenia (Norway) - My Minds Eye & The Other Side
Both of these songs/videos are with the 3rd of 4 singers [Dave Lister]...cleavage you could ski down[/Dave Lister]

Leaves' Eyes (Germany/Norway) - My Destiny

Unsun (Poland) - Whispers

I ordered pretty much everything available from these 3 groups the other day.

Fairly recent good song discovery: "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" by Florence and the Machine. Not sure I'm going to bother with the album, because it's all over the place stylistically, but this one I love. A bit like Kate Bush crossed with Dolores from Cranberries.

Recent album discovery: xx by The xx (sample track: "Crystalised"). Mopey boy and girl vocals, lofi electronic beats, guitars. Think Young Marble Giants, Tricky, Mazzy Star, the Cure circa 17 Seconds, the Notwist, the Jesus and Mary Chain's quieter songs, even Chris Isaak, distantly.

Discovery coming soon: I've only heard brief samples, but Hudson Mohawke's new album Butter looks set to be really something. The label says, "Butter sonically slides between a near unclassifiable strand of technicolour R'n'B, beats, UK bass music and vintage soul." That pushes a lot of my buttons, and the mp3 sample sounds pretty good, as do the Heralds of Change EPs he did with Mike Slott.
