What's the best action sequence in the reboot films?

The opening to 09, for sure. It does everything in those first eight or nine minutes that the reboot film needed to do. Reestablish the Star Trek universe, the look, the music, and the narrative conceit. Tahir and Hemsworth both give great performances and just... Wow. It hits ya right in the ticker seeing Winona with baby Jim and you know his life has been forever changed, and not for the better. At least that was my reaction to it.
the 09 opening was mindblowing in that it was the first time wed seen Trek get the huge blockbuster treatment (since TMP but i wasn't around for that) , knowing that this was a no expense spared mega budget 150m Trek movie (after the previous 9 modest budget movies) from an all new 'movie' team/trendy director whod just come off MI3 (reigniting the Trek/MI connection) totally unconnected to any previous Berman tv stuff.. like 'wow this is what star trek looks like when its got an unlimited budget' (like TMP but now). the new way space and the ship were portrayed (the early tantalising glimpses of the never before seen ship almost NX01 in the design/hull plating), stepping out onto the lensflare bridge/viewscreen, the strange almost ENT/TNGy uniforms, hearing familiar terms like 'klingons', 'phasers', 'shields', 'Kirk' 'Spock' thrown about ('You are Captain now Mr Kirk' -you could just tell the audience were thinking 'huuh! omg that's Captain Kirk!'), the mammoth Vger style ship, the vaguely TOS style shuttle, TNG era Romulans, Ambassador Spock hologram (Spock! in a Trek movie again! and its taking Unification into account!), and finally the massive metallic starfleet 'A' with 'S T A R T R E K' (TOS style lettering) to the bombastic vaguely Horneresque score .. for a trekkie it was mindblowing stuff you never thought youd see.

It also remains the best space battle in the three films so far, which is a shame. The warp chase in STID, while more visceral, was just too short for me to be considered, otherwise it would be right up there.
I liked the space battle towards the end of 09 as well, with some great tense moments with Kirk and Spock on the ship.

Also, the Beyond final sequence was pretty incredible as well. 09's opener gets me is because of the emotional impact of Kirk Sr's death as his son is being born. Yeah, I cry every time.

I was actually referring to the space battle at the beginning of the film. I'm not a big fan of the one at the end. It all seemed a bit 'static' by comparison, whereas the the 09 opener was much more dynamic with more exciting camerawork IMO :)

Generally speaking, I agree. But, I think the tactics employed in the ending battle were quite unique and added a different dynamic to the battle.

I'm just going to be echoing here, but it's a tough tie for me between the Kelvin sequence & Beyond's swarm scene.

The Kelvin sequence was a very well paced and emotional piece. As soon as Robau is killed and the alarms hit, there's panic, urgency, running, desperation, drama and in all the shooting and the movement it all comes down to that last moment that is brilliantly heartbreaking and hopeful all at once.

A quick, dramatic space action sequence with an emotional end.

Meanwhile Beyonds swarm scenes - while it felt much longer - had a lot of layers in terms of what each character was doing at the time and was very visceral in how the ship was torn apart and how these people all reacted to it. It was the first time we'd seen a ship and it's crew fighting for just a few more minutes; clinging on for dear life instead of an instant "Get out, boom!", brought some great escape sequences (Uhura staring behind & Scotty using what he had around him) again all leading to that last dramatic moment of Kirk watching his ship burn as he escaped.

There have been other good sequences; the rescue sequence in Beyond, Klingon choreography in ID etc - but the above were just a lot better for me as the scenes were motivated, and concluded by, an emotional plot point where the action wasn't just good, but left an impact.

09 and beyond are almost equally great but what makes 09 better is the feel of the action scenes.

09 action scenes are very emotional and intense and you feel the high stakes in the film and that is all thanks to jj abrams film making talents.

The Kelvin sequence certainly stands out for me. Part of that may be from how I first experienced it - a midnight premiere at IMAX largely populated by fans - but even on a recent rewatch in TV it held up so well.

The swarm sequence in Beyond was impressive, but I found bits of it really hard to follow. Hopefully it will be better when I see it on a smaller screen (when they finally release a feature-complete disc).

I'm not sure if this is my favorite but I do like the moment in the 09 movie where Kirk is fighting a romulan and is getting strangled and the romulan lets up to hear what he is saying and he deleivers the " I got your gun" line and shoots him.

Probably pushes the definition of 'action scene', but I'm throwing In Khan 'commandeering' the Vengeance bridge. Everything from pummelling Kirk and Scotty, to snapping Carol's leg, to the Gregor-ing of Marcus.

I broke my leg as a kid, and I think I downright had sympathy pains when I first heard Carol's snap. That's emotion.

I don't know. The tension ramps up considerably and then Khan just goes berserk. I think it fits.
