It's been said countless times already, but I fail to see the brilliance of a script that has a Vulcan captain, eject an unconcious, if unruly element, out the side of a ship with a perfectly functional brig, so he can land on a random icy planet, where he will not only meet the older version of that Vulcan, but the soon to be chief engineer as well.

Great writing that.

I think it demonstrates that Spock (and Nero, for that matter) were genre-savvy. Exactly how many times has locking James T. Kirk or Spock in jail actually helped the antagonist? They always just break out and cause chaos. Leaving Kirk on the Enterprise would just give him the opportunity to build support among the crew and raise a proper mutiny. Similarly, Nero keeping Spock on the Narada would've just been giving him an opportunity to escape into the bowels of the ship and foil his plan somehow.

And the planet wasn't quite random. It was the closest mostly-uninhabited rock near Vulcan, making it a prime psychic viewing spot or pit stop. Remember, Kirk and Spock weren't supposed to be killed, just exiled to where they couldn't possibly cause any trouble. Scotty being there is a stretch, admittedly, but the rest is fairly plausible.
