What's keeping me out of the theatre....

If that were the case, it would not have been CANCELLED during its second season, only to be brought back due to the first mail-in campaign. And the lousy ratings stayed lousy through the third year.

Actually, most of that was Gene's bullshit, frankly. Trek's ratings were not stellar or great, but they were decent enough. Trek, behind the scenes, though, was a extremely troublesome show which the executives were trying to kill starting at about the second batch of first season - due to many, many problems with the cast and crew - many of which were pinned squarely on Gene. (Like screwing all the women on the set and then giving them casting bonuses that were against the law, and so on).

Third season only came about because Gene wasn't in it, but by that point, Desilu and NBC really had made up their mind. They put the show in the 'death slot' and slashed its budget. While some of the stars went on to do other things (Shatner, in particular), Trek became poison due to the reputation that the cast and crew had earned. Gene, himself, would take twenty years before his career would go anywhere again...

I think that means you might be the most balanced person on the board.

You can have your cake and eat it, but you don't eat so much that you find yourself throwing up, either on yourself or those around you.

I didn't love the movie, yet find myself most simpatico with the gushers.

What does that say about me? (Nothing good, I'm sure.)

It probably sez the same about you as him. I mean that in a good way.

(Except of course, that YOU're going to hell.)

I can tell a shit film from the trailers, thanks.

And yet anybody on this board who makes that claim about TREK gets a zillion gushers going for the throat, saying you can't evaluate it on the basis of some clips. Lovin' that double standard.

Yeah, I agree with you. That was my point.

There has been more than enough pre-release material for a person to decide if this film is to their liking or not before setting a foot in the theater. I'm rarely surprised by the movies I go see.

What it comes down to, ultimately, is this: do you want Master and Commander or do you want Pirates of the Carribean? I want the former, actually, but I can grin like a chimp at the latter if I have to.

I liked both of them a lot, actually. I think Trek should be more like the former, however.

Uh, Brutal, TOS's ratings were actually middling to good throughout it's original run

If that were the case, it would not have been CANCELLED during its second season, only to be brought back due to the first mail-in campaign. And the lousy ratings stayed lousy through the third year.

Also, the mail-in campaign wasn't a huge fan movement. It's more of a testament to copy machines and ditto paper.

I think that is counter-spin, myself. When you look at how NBC kept lowering the number of letters they received with the passage of years, the only agency that might have been behind it all was the post office (6c per letter times six or seven figure volumes of letters = ... )

No, actually they were not. It was kind of like the situation with nuBSG in that TV critics LIKED Gene's Star Trek a lot; but it never got beyond number 68 in the ratings during it's network run. Those are the facts.

There's also a memo from Star Trek execs to GR regarding some of Nimoy's demands during the second and third seasons where they state "he's acting like this is a Top Ten rated show. Has he seen the actual ratings?"

Now, once the show hit syndication there ARE stories where (in some markets) re-runs of Star Trek were shown in spots right before national network programming because in those markets it occassionally got rating that were respectible in regard to the Prime-Time stuff airing after, and they thought it might boost things.

But Star Trek's ratings were never considered good by any stretch of the imaginationduring it's network run AT ALL.

Is it possible you're mixing up demographics with Nielsen? Demographics had TREK appealing to the buying viewer, but ratingswise, it was almost never above the 50s, and that was when there was what, 70 shows on? Those kind of numbers let ODD COUPLE stay on awhile, but ODD COUPLE didn't have a huge optical budget.

Still, it wasn't as if the letters did much of anything. They wanted to can the show because it wasn't popular enough to compensate for the production costs and the headaches involved in dealing with Gene.

Gee, Warped9, it sounds like some one peed in your pop corn.

You were expecting to hate this movie, so your opinion that it is was "garbage" was not surprising. But, it's good that you saw it, so that your opinions can be based on first-hand knowledge rather than hearsay.

So, now that you saw it for free do you owe me $9.75 and some Junior Mints?

First you talk about pee in popcorn, then you ask for Jr Mints?

Be careful what you ask for ...

And The Odd Couple had a famously hard time staying on the air, which is why they resorted to a season full of ridiculous guest stars right before they got shit-canned.

In short, Abrams has shown himself supremely competent at giving people--even smart people--the dumb entertainment they want.

Not to single you out in particular, but as a sentiment, please do get over yourself.

Dumb? Star Trek? W T F

Warp 10 Salamada? Do klingons take prisoners or what? Is there a barrier at the edge of the galaxy? There is? Bollocks!

The smart fans want to see the Enterprise gang having more outings, and if it takes dumb entertainment to do that, why not? Entertainment is entertainment is it not?

No, it is not, or else you'd be a fan of everything.

Kudos for replying to an unintelligible post.

$135,966,722 now worldwide in 6.5 days. $10 million a day in the quieter 3 weekdays since Sunday.

I guess the movie is not keeping people out of the theaters.

My only real problem with the Pirates movies is that they are waaaaaay too long for the trifles that they are. They're like a Thanksgiving dinner comprised of nothing but cotton candy. Do you prefer pink meat or blue?

I do expect a genuine effort to build upon the things that brought TOS tolife for many of us.

In the version I saw, there were dozens and dozens of genuine efforts "to build upon the things that brought TOS to life for many of us".

I believe his post should have read "for a few of us." The majority of Trek fans - the vast majority of TOS fans - are enjoying the hell out of this movie. :techman:
