What's keeping me out of the theatre....

What's keeping me out of the theatre is that I do not, in any way, shape, or form, want to be associated with the fanbase of this movie that I've seen. I am, honestly, disgusted by them.

Since the DVD is only a few months away, I'll probably get the movie then, where I don't have to deal with anyone telling me how much this grade-B action flick is going to 'own me' and 'make me its bitch'.

What have you seen? According to poll demographics, the majority of the people seeing it are over 35!! 20% are of the age group I am assuming you are talking about.

Its sad that the Onion parody is so true with the small but vocal portion of ST fans. I honestly don't care if the people not seeing it from this thread aren't. ST is about open mindedness, and if the old detritus of ST fans falls along with the release of the new movie, so be it.

By the looks of it we won't miss you.

RAMA

Funny, I'm just a hair shy of thirty and I looked like I was the youngest person in the theater. Of course, this was a 12:30 showing on a school/work day.

Oh Paramount/CBS is definately trying to target the teenage boy crowd.. but it's Star Trek, which means that my generation and up will be the ones to go 'religiously' really... and go early.

Well, whatever's "keeping people out of the theater" is evidently not resulting in empty seats or unsold tickets - the movie's made 32 million dollars already. :)

The theater i saw it in was packed... and not with angry TOS purists.. mostly people giving Trek a chance for the first time.

And isnt that the real hope?

And The Bridges of Madison County sold 50 million copies. Have you ever read that book?

Mass appeal means nothing.

To those of you who are being "kept out of the theater," for whatever reason, what are you doing this weekend while the rest of us are enjoying ourselves with all things Trek?

Joe, not judging

Same thing we do every weekend, Pinky: try and take over the world.

(Actually, I already saw it and, at the request of my elder brother, who made me a Star Trek back in the 70s, I'm going to see it again at 4.)

Given how lame the other ten are, that'd be an improvement.

I'm not sure that JJ's take would translate into a series very well, even given what I know through reviews and spoilers, but it's a bit more palatable as a film franchise, even as a concept.

What Star Trek do you like?

And that means you get to come in and be a complete and total prat to people? I wonder, Dennis, at what point did you say "Hey, these people don't like what I do, I should treat them like total shit, because, dammit, this movie means more to me than human decency."

At the end of the day, you are why I don't want to see this movie. You and guys like you who are so emotionally invested in a piece a fiction that they feel free to treat real people like utter shit over it.

Must be a good movie!

I mean, if 5 million people like something, it's got to be good, right?

Now, now. Dennis would treat you like shit even if there wasn't a new Trek movie out. :)

What other movies are you refusing to see this summer?

What movies did you refuse to see last year?

The world must know, and I don't care if it takes another 13 pages to find out.

Joe, so interested

I'm not going to see the movie because I've lost interest in it over the course of the months, just not my cup of tea anymore.

So it didn't keep you out of the theater. Why are you here? Not enough 'entertainment' for you elsewhere?

If that is REALLY 'what this is all about' that is.
I have no clue what you want from me.

Why am I where? On the Trek BBS? In this thread?

In this thread. As in 'check the title.'

Some of the folks here wouldn't have gone w/o a free pass, so they had comments in that context.

I don't see anything from you about what was going to be keeping you out of the theater (because nothing would apparently), and of course your presence also makes Bailey keep climbing the fence and (mis)speaking for others and playing in fields where the mod isn't in his pocket (one hopes anyway.)
Wow, I must have totally missed the rule stating that I'm only allowed to post in threads where I agree with the idea expressed in the thread title/original post. :wtf:

True enough, I suppose.

But it makes me wonder why people invest their egos into something they had no part in making, creating, writing, acting, etc... to the point that they're willing to behave in the way they do to 'defend' it...

Well, there is a rule against baiting.. and leaping in with very thinly-veiled baits would make me question why you came in here...

I mean, if 5 million people like something, it's got to be good, right?
No, you're right, mass appeal doesn't automatically mean that a movie is good. That being said, disagreeing with lots and lots of people doesn't make one any more perceptive or discerning.

Whoa, whoa! Where have I been trying to bait anyone in this thread? I'd say you read too much into my posts, Vance. And I don't like when people accuse me of something I haven't done.

As opposed to the eight-year-old boy crowd, like pretty much all Trek that came before it? My concern was that they would try too hard to target the teenage girl crowd.
But seriously, folks. I've loved Trek for years and walked into this movie feeling very anxious. I walked out having some problems with the movie, but generally very happy.
Now if you'll excuse me... I'm going to go buy some toys.
